@MomofMTBoy, I’ve said this to many about Point Park, while the conservatory is known for their dance, they aren’t looking to stack the program with super strong dancers. They also appreciate a strong singer/actor. Dance would be my daughter’s weakest discipline and she’s there. Like all parents here have said you really can’t read much into what was said or not said in the audition. It’ll drive one to insanity. It sounds like he had a good experience. Good luck to him this season!
I can only echo was @GSOMTMom said. They have kids on many dance levels at PPU. One of the first things they do with freshman is audition them for their dance levels. While mine was a fairly strong dancer coming in, it’s by no means her strongest discipline (I think she’d consider herself a singer first, then dancer, than actress). Like your son, she had a super positive audition experience (it was her first audition at NYC Unifieds and I think her exact quote when she came back to the hotel was “That woman loved me”). But she had similar positive experiences at other schools where she wasn’t admitted. It’s really had to get a read on the room, or know how many other kids of your kid’s type they’ve seen and loved. Best of luck!
With all the results coming out for class of 2021 and about 8 weeks left of freshman year, I was wondering what the class of 2020 will be up to this summer? I’ll start.
My D was pre-cast a year ago for a lead in a show here locally for the beginning of the summer. She also had some generals that she did while home for spring break (for shows later in summer) and will be doing callbacks before heading back to school in a few days. She is also desperate to get her first “muggle job” (as she calls it) and put in a few applications. She will hit the pavement hard when she returns, as while she is being paid well for shows, she would like to earn as much as possible over the summer and get some “regular” job experience. Would love to hear what everyone else is planning!
Similar @stagedoormama My D will do her regular summer jobs. She has a couple. Not performance based -but related to theater. She is also planning to be part of a performance for a few weeks and maybe fit some travel in too. Has to earn some money -but hopes to have some fun along the way.
My D is straight up muggle-jobbing it. Not sure what she will do, but she needs to earn some real cash to support her extracurriculars when she gets back to school in the fall. Her folks are going to let her shoulder the burden of all the fun she’s having in NYC…
My son will work behind the desk at an acting studio summer intensive for kids and teens. He’s also hoping for another (non-performance) job, as he’s learned this year that money gets spent much more quickly than it is earned
Thanks for posting this @stagedoormama – My D has loved her first year at Boco she is over the moon happy there which is a big Phew! This summer stock thing was overwhelming it brings back memories of unifieds
She will be traveling a bit this summer and returning to her old job here at home, hoping to intern for a summer program but not sure yet.
Still up in the air for my D. She has one offer for a professional theatre but it is housing only. She really needs to earn money this summer for next year. She had a callback at a local community theatre, but the show isn’t really a great fit for her so she’s not holding her breath. She has one more audition next weekend for another non-professional theatre. Crossing her fingers for that one. So, as soon as all the options are exhausted, she’ll make a decision on what show she will be doing and how she’ll fit in some money earning/saving.
My D is finishing up her auditions for the summer. If she doesn’t book anything she will work as a counselor at a theater camp. She absolutely loves being a BFA MT at Howard! She is in love with D.C. So many opportunities! Good luck to all of you and your children! May all their dreams come true!
My S is coming home to LA and will be auditioning for film/tv work and then has a paying gig at a teen musical theatre camp as the AD or an intern for 4 weeks. Looking to audition for a theatre show if he can, too! But his goal this summer is to make money
Our D is heading to a summer study abroad in Vienna and Berlin, offered through Harvard, that will focus on upper level German and the arts, from the 19th century to present day. The students will spend a good amount of time attending operas, symphonies, and other live theatre and then will dissect them in the classroom. She’s thrilled to have this opportunity. Next summer she’ll work at something that pays–summer stock, if lucky enough to book, camp, or a regular job. It’s fun to hear from others. I also am learning a lot from the summer stock page. Thanks for posting, friends.
@HappyDancer98 That sounds like an awesome experience. I hope you come back to update us.
My S has enjoyed his year so far! He has really enjoyed being in a full conservatory where he is able to attend lots of different events (orchestra, opera, dueling piano’s, faculty performances, etc.) He is very thankful for the relationships he has formed with the upperclassmen MT’s. He understudied a role his first semester and got a pre-recorded voice solo second semester. He has had the chance to network with several industry professionals, participate in or watch many masterclasses, and audition for summer stock on campus. He has taken an offer he received through on campus auditions. He has collaborated on a few projects with music composition, instrumentalists, and other music majors in the conservatory. He will be a part of presenting one of those projects this weekend.
Academically, he finds his classes challenging. He is being pushed and stretched to grow his “craft” and he finds that extremely rewarding. He has called home to share what would seem like a total fail with such a joy in his voice. He has truly learned his biggest lessons and grown the most at those moments. He has only had to take 1 class outside of MT curriculum/ semester so far, but he also enjoyed those.
He does not have a lot of free time (they keep them business with required attendance events during the weekend also), but he has managed to participate in a few volunteer activities, attend lecture series and special events on campus, and most of the plays his Acting friends have been in.
D headed to Big Fork Summer Playhouse in Montana. I will miss her, as it is a long summer of shows, but she is excited. Booked it from SETC.
I love seeing all of the different things our class of 2020 are doing this summer! Looks like everyone had a great freshman year so far!
My D is doing an internship at the Cannes Film Festival in France for 2 weeks at the end of May and then working as a camp counselor mid-June to mid-August. I’ll only see her for about 3 1/2 weeks total all summer, but she’s super excited for her plans! It’s been a great year so far and she’s loving all the opportunities and people she’s been exposed to in college.
Does anyone know of any summer dance intensive for MT singer actor dancer (in that order) - daughter is a freshman BFA MT and wants to make up for lost time in dance over the summer. She has 1st year dance along with a few experiences in high school- probably not good enough for a medium to high level program but doesn’t want to be in a beginner program either. Any advice? We are east coast mid Atlantic region. Thanks
@Lake. RockWest. Broadway Dance Center has beginner tap etc.! It might be beneficial to get a coach/teacher at a local studio to do privates.
@lake4 Point Park has a summer dance intensive but I believe the audition and application dates have passed.
@lake4 Rider University has one. I think it might be geared towards high school students but it is definitely for MT"s who are not “dancers” per se.
Look into the Broadway Dance Center Summer Training Program.
