Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

For those students receiving a letter from Temple, I recommend you call to confirm acceptance into BFA MT or BFA Acting program. The letter last year appeared to be an acceptance into the program but really wasn’t. The letter was worded very poorly and made you believe you were admitted into BFA but really not.

I agree the letter from the college of theatre was very poorly worded.

Thanks @lincoln56! We auditioned in NYC. We haven’t visited campus, but I think we will over spring break and try to see a show. What did you think of campus?

The letter is confusing, but it states “…you have successfully completed the audition requirements for the BFA in Musical Theater degree program.” It goes on to say that the program is very competitive and you are to be congratulated on your achievement, etc. I sure hope this means she was accepted into the BFA MT program! What did it say last year @mysonggirl?

@LAM2017- I would definitely call and inquire. Stating that you have completed the audition requirements is not the same thing as saying you have been accepted into the BFA MT program. The way I (personally) would interpret the letter is that you have finished the requirements for applying to the program. Basically a letter saying you have done everything for the school you need for them to make a decision. I could be totally off- base, but that is how it sounds to me.

@KPike320 ok, full confession…I made some kind of snide comment like that some place on here…like, “it’s a problem I’d like to have”… which after all those declines, just getting an acceptance felt like a good place to start. I couldn’t even consider the stress of the cost issue before an acceptance. I mean our entire family did all that as part of the college research process a year ago. My D had a few real reaches and mostly more affordable options she loved too. Go figure, the most extreme financial reach would invite her to attend. With that said, I am now anxiously awaiting the financial package…we are still early in the process, all of us…so much can change in the next 30 days or so. I try to remain optimistic. She knows we will do everything we can, but she is level headed and also understands the limits of our wealth, that was always part of this process. But, like this dream of performing, how do you really know unless you try?

And the auditions are done and we wait.

@LAM2017 My S is definitely in the BFA MT program at Temple. After the NYC unifieds he received a letter dated 1/27 that was very poorly worded, and I asked my son to call and confirm what it meant when it said: “I am pleased to inform you that you have successfully completed the audition requirements for the BFA in Musical Theatre degree program.” However, before he called admissions (which let’s face it, was not going to happen anytime soon) his portal was updated with a letter dated 1/31 from Admissions that said, “Congratualtions!..you have been granted admission…to Temple University’s School of Theater, Film and Media Arts, Musical Theater major on the Main Campus.” Rest easy, and call on Monday if you need reassurance. I have little to no information about Temple and its program. We plan to visit over spring break. I remember getting the letter and we were all thinking, "Do we celebrate? What does this mean? and After my son read it a few times, I read it a few times, and my husband read it a few times we all decided that it was an artistic acceptance pending academic acceptance. But really, they do need to re-think the wording of that letter. And maybe change the spelling of theater to theatre?

@efr9598 isn’t that a great feeling? I was so happy to able to be home this weekend! The waiting is a killer but at least we are home! Clicking my heels…there’s no place like home…

@momtojoss Yup! It is nice to be home. And the last audition seemed to leave the S in a good emotional place!

Aargh one more audition for us … end of
March … might cancel if D decides to go with what she has at that point .
I SO get everyone’s financial comments. We are trying to be frugal too but with MT that is dang near impossible since you try to have your kid audition at less expensive schools but then they don’t get admitted to them and then they get admitted to ones that end up killing you financially.
THERE IS NO BIGGER CRAP SHOOT THEN MT ADMISSIONS! ~X(

Not to worry anyone on a weekend but my Ds letter from Temple said exactly the same but it was an admit to the theatre dept not the BFA program. So probably should call to inquire on Monday.

Thanks @mysonggirl but I’m not going to worry about it. We will check the portal on Monday. The letter clearly states BFA MT so I’m not sure how it can be just for the Dept. But it’s definitely confusing so we will see!

@KPike320 and @followurheart It was me. I made a flip comment about the money. Believe me, we DO NOT have that luxury either. Not like some of the people I have run into over the course of this journey. Some who have traveled all over the country to live audition at more than 20 schools, pay for private coaching and expensive summer programs and have their kids attend private schools for performing arts. I did not mean to make it sound like we have deep pockets and I do not begrudge those who have the means to give their children all of those experiences. My husband and I are elementary school educators… All I meant is I’ll do my best to pay for it (someone mentioned selling a kidney?) IF it happens. So far we haven’t gotten an acceptance or a wait list. 11 auditions done. One to go at the end of March (unless something happens sooner). 2 nos so far and we had the conversation at dinner of what if it doesn’t happen…sigh. Keeping a good thought for everyone, this is not easy!

@ALS0830 where is your last audition? Also feeling your pain which is why we did not audition at the 2 most expensive schools because I did not want to say NO WE CANT AFFORD IT!

@lincoln56 Millikin!

Has Texas state made calls? I only ask because I remember the calls going out fairly early last year. Curious about a few in the running there but afraid to ask.

@lincoln56 Is there a thread on here that ranks schools according to price? How do you know which are the most expensive, etc. I discovered this page late in the game…and I might of done things differently than most people. We just made a list of everywhere she wanted to go…she has known since she was 10 and then applied and auditioned. We just figure we will see where she gets in and what we get in terms of financial aid and scholarships and take it from there… Maybe that’s not a good idea?

@singoutlouise my spreadsheet had columns for tuition and room and board and if the schools gives merit scholarships.

@marg928 how do I find that?

@lincoln56 in addition to my own excel spreadsheet, I like to look at StartClass to compare schools - it includes cost of attendance. We did our own spreadsheet with cost of attendance, school size, D’s scholarship amount, etc. so that we can sit her down when all of the acceptances come through and make an informed decision.
