Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

@virmom1 we are waiting on BW bfa acting too, haven’t heard anything and haven’t seen anyone else saying the had heard so I’m guessing they haven’t started notifications yet.

@LAM2017 we were wondering the same things about NYU? Our email said that they just wanted to know if S had committed to another program already and that they were starting the final review. Did everyone applying to NYUTisch get the same email? Were some worded differently? Will they send out information to some people a bit early about accepted students weekend like they have in the past? I have in my notes that they accept 75 to yield 60 but I don’t know if that is all studios, just MT studio, or bad numbers? Anyone else apply to NYU Tisch have more information for me?

@MomofMTBoy our email was the same. Asking if we had committed early decision somewhere and, if so, they would not review our app any further. I think 60 students may be just for MT? I am not sure. I know the program is large, so we can hold out hope for an acceptance! But, then comes the financing issue!

The waiting is so hard, but things really shift and open up as kids start to commit to a program. It’s a crazy ride for sure.

Same email from NYU. I think MT studio takes 50-60 but we were told NYU Tisch gets thousands of applications for the MT and acting studios so they make take more but the applicant pool is quite large too.

Got the same email from NYUTisch on Friday afternoon that others have referenced above. It said:
“Our admission committee is finalizing the review of your application for admission. We are checking in to determine if you have been offered admission to another college or university under an Early Decision program and have now made a binding commitment to another institution. If you have done so, please click here to let us know.
You do not need to respond to this email and you do not need to reiterate your interest in NYU. This communication is simply to determine if you have already committed to attend another college or university through a binding Early Decision program.”
Sounds like they’ve sent it to everyone to (hopefully) reduce their review workload if ED folks headed elsewhere are still in the pool. @MomofMTBoy and @LAM2017 I don’t know about the numbers either, but would be interested to hear if someone does!

The NYU email is interesting - not something they did in my D’s year. But then, they are a late notifying school, so it actually kind of makes sense to me.

Answering question above- yes- they have about 60 in the Tisch MT program. Within the acting studios, some take a similar number, some a bit less - just depends.

My D has seemed fairly calm and pragmatic about all of this, but there is definitely stress there. She told me about a dream where she’s in a classroom and the teacher is handing out a stack of acceptance letters to everyone and she gets to the last one but it’s not for her so the teacher tells her she has to leave. :frowning:

has anyone heard anything from depaul yet or knows when and how we will hear? also do most schools put scholarship offers in acceptance letters or in separate communications later??

@MomofMTBoy, Point Park never closes due to snow. Drives the students nuts! :))

@guillelm my S called DePaul last week, they said their acceptances would start coming out 3-15. That was for BFA acting, I would assume same for MT.

DePaul doesn’t have MT

We got the same email from NYU!

@guillelm Most schools announce their scholarship offers a few weeks after the admission offer. A lot of schools also announce merit scholarships and talent scholarships is separate communications, also spaced weeks apart, because the merit money comes from the admissions department and the talent money comes from the drama department.

Regarding the NYU letter “are you still interested” letter… my D did not apply to Tisch, she applied to Steinhardt and did not pass PS, did not get any communication at all about that even though we emailed and the portal showed it was received. So we took them off the list. But she got that letter too! So, not to be deflating… but I don’t think that letter means anything. Best wishes to everyone!

@Eliza806 I agree. It appears the email is from the main NYU admissions department, not specifically from Tisch. My guess is that Tisch has done its part (artistic review) and passed that info on to the main admissions department for academic review before final decisions are given? Anybody have any idea?

@Theatrical Have your daughter consider a gap year. Then hire an audition coach for next year. Mary Anna Dennard is excellent. She will skype with you if you aren’t in her area. My friend’s son used her and got into USC’s Theater program and others as well… My daughter didn’t use her for personal coaching but we purchased her online tutorials to learn about various things - like how to put together your audition materials, what your resume should look like etc… My daughter applied to 10 schools and was offered spots by 4. OR - she can go to the program she was redirected to if they let Freshmen audition for the MT program at the end of their first year. If she does this, make sure she is taking private voice lessons from one of the faculty at that school.

I imagine it’s just to save themselves the unnecessary work of considering people and doing the paperwork for those who have already committed elsewhere. We got an email a couple of weeks ago directly from Tisch asking us if we would consider other studios besides the music theater studio and that was directly from Tisch and seemed to be happening before they were about to make artistic decisions.

@spike27 I think you are right. We didn’t get that Tisch email you referenced, but my D was asked about that in her auditions and in a Skype interview. She said yes, of course!

I’m not sure if they are still auditioning but people should consider Oklahoma City University’s Bachelors in Music - Music Theater degree. It’s not technically a BFA (which as a parent, I was happy about) - but their curriculum very much resembles a BFA program. They have one of the top dance programs in the country and the MT kids take from the same dance faculty. They also have a Vocal Performance degree so their voice faculty is exceptional. They produce a lot of wonderful talent. (Kristin Chenoweth, Kelli O’Hara and many more). I saw a list where they were in the top 15 for alumni on broadway … they have a great alumni network in New York as well.

As you start getting your acceptance letters - you will soon find that many of the top programs do not offer enough scholarship money to make it a financially reasonable option (unless you are rich). My daughter was accepted into Syracuse and Boston Conservatory - but after scholarships it was still going to be $60,000+/year - and that didn’t include travel expenses etc… OCU was much more reasonable. My daughter had straight As in high school and did above average on the ACT but I suppose if your child did really really great on those you could get more academic money than my daughter did. However, with everyone so desperate to get into a program, they don’t really have any incentive to offer more to the students. I just couldn’t justify paying $250,000 for a degree where there was a good chance my daughter was going to wait tables for a while after graduating. At any rate, OCU provided a great program for significantly less money.
