Hartt…accepted academically in December, auditioned at LA Unifieds in Feb. Crickets.
My D has a friend at Hartt and I believe she said something about someone in the dept having health issues so that could be why the decisions have been slow in coming out.
@EIS0301 Congrats! Even if you get in CMU you are choosing between two tippy top programs. I think I’d take the in-state tuition at UMich instead of the mammoth tuition at CMU. Good luck!
@mtmamma2020 i’m in the group chat for Michigan, and it turns out they actually accepted three from the state of Michigan! Big year i guess
@EIS0301 that is excellent news!! and I agree with @MTDadandProud the program and tuition are plus plus!!
I don’t know where the info comes from… (and I have heard it on these boards several times) that Michigan does not accept in state… know several kids from Michigan accepted. And what would be the reason?
We always hear the same thing about CCM not taking Cincinnati kids. I asked about this “hearsay” when we toured CCM during HS junior year. The CCM admissions person essentially told us that they are “equal opportunity rejectors” - they reject students in equal percentages, no matter where they’re from or what CCM major they are applying for - but b/c so many people in the Cincinnati area know someone (or many someones) who has been rejected it “seems like” they are prejudiced against local applicants. Perhaps people in Michigan hear/feel the same thing about UM.
I hear the same about Rutgers…there is a PA HS in my county and I understand there is one girl from there in the program and she was the first to get in in 15 years.
I believe many of these rumors are started by people trying to justify why they (or whichever talented child they are invested in) weren’t accepted. How many times have people here said, “I didn’t get in, but I’m glad because I heard xyz?” The day before they were anxiously awaiting a decision on a school that they now hate. It’s an unfortunate defense mechanism that leads to years of misinformation because it is repeated every time someone doesn’t get in.
As stated above, the percentage of acceptances at most schools are low, very low. I believe due to proximity and knowledge of a “local” program they may get a larger percentage of local (in state) applicants, which reduces percentage of accepted from low to minuscule.
@IfYouOnlyKnew definitely a good point but I also wonder if they are biased towards getting the OOS tuition because the programs are so small…
@marg928, that’s part of the rumors that fly about in state programs. I hear it here for the U-North Carolina system, as well, for the School of the Arts and Chapel Hill in general. It’s competitive out there, they’re accepting the best candidates and as @IfYouOnlyKnew stated, there is a higher percentage of locals applying which means a higher percentage will be turned down than from other states. Could what you say be the case? Possibly, but I think it all boils down to math and statistics.
@marg928 ~ The programs are so small but the universities are so large (U of M undergrad is 28,000+) that getting OOS tuition for those few coveted spots is negligible.
When I read the 1st comment about Michigan not taking instate kids I got curious, because I know there are some states (Texas? NC?) that prioritize instate kids at their flagships. But what I was reading was that U of M (as a WHOLE, I read nothing about MT specifically) is really going after OOS kids b/c they pay full freight - which is good for the school as a whole.
There are some schools where they seem to like local kids - I can think of 8 Cleveland area kids that we know (went to school with D, did local shows with D) over a 3 year period year who ended up at BW MT (and a couple other accepted whom did not attend)
My D made a decision, and committed to a program Monday evening. She took us by surprise-she still hadn’t heard from 2 programs at that point (she has since received an acceptance to one of them.) We had a couple tense phone exchanges that day-I think tears were shed on both ends. Her dad and I wanted to take her time to CAREFULLY consider some of her options-applying for the BA option at one or more of the schools that gave her great merit aid; consider a public ivy that accepted her for a completely different major; wait on the end of month notification for a particularly large merit award at a school where she didn’t get into the BFA, and consider THEIR BA: BUT-She. Was. Done. She wants a BFA MT, and she is taking one in hand, and is going to make the best of it. Just as she was completely unwilling to consider BFA Acting programs anywhere (we are confident, and have it on good authority that she would have yielded more acceptances had she considered it), she was steadfast in committing to this program, and doing it now. The awesome news is that she will be 90 minutes away; and the best news yet is that she earned a full tuition scholarship and a spot in the Honors College! WOOT.
Out of consideration for D, I will not name the school until we let friends and family know, and I see that she is posting it on social media, lol! THEN I’ll post a Final Decisions saga-which will break CC, or at least put me in CC jail or somethn’. I wanted to share because there IS light at the end of the tunnel! My whole outlook changed once I got the email receipt for her downpayment. I can look solely at the chosen school’s dining options, 4 year curriculum, professor bios, & the important stuff-like tailgate apparel and car magnets
Wishing you all the very best of outcomes!!!
Congratulations @owensfolks I cannot wait to shop for apparel and car magnets. Hehe! That is more my speed.
Congrats, @owensfolks! I actually got a bit teary eyed reading your post, we have been on this journey together for some time. I’m very happy for your D (and mom and dad)!
@marg928 except… my S’s school is private so in state doesn’t apply, but the same rumors are circled. I don’t know if my S’s school favors local students, but my part of the state has very quality youth theater education that starts young, which leads to well trained college auditioners. I’ve noticed that the kids from here do well in audition pool most years, so it would be normal that my S’s school would take a few more local kids (4 out of 20 in my S’s class).
Congrats to your D @owensfolks! And congrats to you! What a relief it must be to focus on one school.
@owensfolks congrats on a decision! I will be glad when this part of the journey is done for our family as well
@LAM2017 -We are going to UArts Accepted Students day Apr 1. Anyone else going that day? @MTMHopeful
