Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

@KelviVan, it can be done. We left Elon after the audition (around 6:30pm), stopped at a restaurant for a quick dinner and changed clothes, then drove through the snow to CCM. We arrived at 4am, took a nap, showered and were at CCM by 8am. We were tired but it was worth it.

MTCA started posting acceptances. A little overwhelming since we haven’t auditioned yet . First this week, NYU and UNCSA . In between auditions for senior musical and midterms . Anyone else from MTCA know if the acceptances from Baldwin Wallace are from the MTCA audition or from earlier auditions?

@musicmama123 I think (but am not 100% positive) that a couple of those are from the MTCA private BW audition.

Thanks! That is the only audition we have done and d has been anxious. So not good news. Vicky left before she sang, it was disconcerting… Well, we have a long road ahead of us! Anybody else get a little anxious when acceptances are going up for colleges you don’t audition for until late February? I’m sure they space out the acceptances and know what they are doing but thinking maybe I should have pushed harder to get to those early auditions!

@musicmama123 Ellen said yesterday that they will be posting acceptances every Sunday. They were concerned about the kids who might get upset if they haven’t had acceptances yet, but they’re facing that in their HS also so it is what it is in my opinion. My D hasn’t done any in person auditions yet either but she has the LMU acceptance via video audition which certainly gives her some relief. I really thought she would have done at least one early audition but that did not happen for us either.

One of the many things that’s unfair about this process is that some people know where they’re going months before others.

When you see those early acceptances and it makes you nervous, just remind yourself – if the school is still conducting auditions, be assured that they would not waste their time or money holding the auditions unless they were still interested in finding people for their program. They do still have space available.
I completely understand thought that it is hard to hear others’ acceptances when you are still waiting on your own.
Hang in there! It’s not an easy process on anyone.

@musicmama123 Vicky left before your D finished her audition? Isn’t she supposed to be the one with the final decision? Seems rude

UNCSA has not started drama auditions yet. Not sure How they accepted someone already unless for a different major. Or for the high school or summer program

@bfahopeful I believe UNCSA is an audition this week; not an acceptance.

Ahhh. Misread. That makes more sense. BAL on auditions.

I saw the national tour of Rent yesterday in Southern California. One of my favorite things is to look at the playbill and see where folks went to school – a great reminder that it all does not come down to one program, one school. This cast had performers from NYU, Syracuse, Boco (yay), Wright State, Milliken, East Carolina, Sam Houston. Lots of options out there and people working from all over!

@Sammy8028
She left before she even auditioned! Apparently she had a plane to catch but there were 2 other faculty in the room. They also cut all monologues due to time constraints . As I said, it was disconcerting but you had to have faith that the people in the room ( I think the head of whole program was in there so that’s good! ) were people that could decide. But D was still upset… but at some point you have to let go of what you cannot control. It’s hard!! I’m sure there will be many things like this along the way!

@mtmamma2020 - there is a girl who was in my Ds MT class at OCU who is also in the company of the Rent national tour. However, she left school early to pursue performance opportunities and did not graduate so her school isn’t noted.

@vvnstar it was a fantastic production!!

This is kind of a random question, but I was wondering if anyone knew which schools allowed their musical theatre majors to also participate in Greek life? I have been searching all over the college websites but none of them really say whether or not MT majors are allowed to be involved in Greek life. Thanks

@bwaybelter I have gotten the impression from schools we’ve visited that Greek life is not
Encouraged or discouraged. I think they think you won’t have time for it. Unless you are in a more flex BA program…

@bwaybelter my D is not going to Kent State, but we met a very nice sophomore MT there, who is in a sorority.

My son is in a non-national fraternity at Otterbein. Many of the fraternity alum were MT or Acting BFAs.

@bwaybelter - My d knows several BFA MT majors in Greek life at various schools, including Western Michigan, TCU, and Texas State. Among those students that she knows, it is more up to the fraternity or sorority than the theatre department as to whether or not a theatre student will be able to participate - a theatre major will usually struggle to make all required fraternity and sorority meetings and events due to the demands of auditions/rehearsals/performances/crew/master classes, and so the Greek organization usually must be flexible with respect to the amount of time that a theatre major can commit to the organization. I think most theatre departments do not “forbid” participation in Greek life, but most probably advise students to carefully consider the severe schedule demands that will result from attempting to juggle all the activities.

One thing to consider - there are likely to be non-departmental theatre opportunities at many campuses, including local professional companies and civic theatres that offer roles to students, and Greek life is likely to preclude or severely limit these parts.
