@mtmamma2020 - the WSU alum is a friend of D’s! Not only is she talented, she is a really great girl.
@bwaybelter - Wright State doesn’t encourage or discourage Greek life. D has had a couple of friends over the years join sororities/fraternities, but most of them don’t, and none in her class, just because they don’t have time. I also don’t think it’s a big deal (at all!) at WSU, unlike at many schools. She has had friends at Elon, Belmont, SMU (acting major not MT) and the University of Alabama all in sororities/fraternities. Most of her MT friends aren’t really interested in Greek life.
I think the majority of students at OCU, including MTs, participate in Greek life. It is pretty low key compare to what I was familiar with at large Southern universities. They are very understanding of scheduling conflicts for performances, rehearsals etc… They do some really great lip synchs and dance routines during Homecoming!
We did find in looking at some schools that although Greek life is not discouraged, it is not common for MTs to be involved. Some of the schools in this category that we looked at included Michigan, Penn State and Carnegie Mellon. Actually at both Penn State and Carnegie Mellon, one of our MT student guides indicated they were the one and only of their cohort to participate in Greek life. So at many schools I think it is common not to participate in Greek life. I would talk to current students at whatever schools are of interest and find out how many MT participate and why or why not if that is important to you.
There are several MT’s in Greek life at Coastal Carolina. But they are in groups that give them a little more flexibility as EmsDad stated. There is also a theatre fraternity that many in the theatre dept belong to that you can join after freshman year.
Having been in a BFA program and a sorority myself, I can tell you it’s pretty hard to be involved and you generally rack up a lot of fines for not being able to attend Chapter. It’s possible to BE Greek but participating fully is difficult. I discouraged my MT daughter from it while simultaneously encouraging her twin at another school to be Greek. Honestly she didn’t have too much time for it either!
@musicmama123 We were at the same MTCA BW auditions and my S auditioned towards the end so he was in the same boat as your daughter (We can private message about the specifics). We haven’t heard anything yet. I believe the male BW acceptance was from a very early audition not Dec. 10th. Not sure of the others.
Hi All - new to all this, I was curious, do most MT schools notify acceptance via email or via a phone call? I have read conflicting info and was wondering how it works - especially from those who have been through the process. For our non-musical theatre schools we were notified one via snail mail (PACE) and one via email (Drexel) OR, do we just have to keep checking the portals after auditions??
@LBSMOM there is a list somewhere on this board stating how each school notifies. The schools vary by portal, phone call, email, snail mail – portal I would say portal being the most popular. I know Michigan, CMU, and TSU call – those come to mind off the top of my head.
If anyone wants to know how BW notifies (rejection)… It’s email. . A rather odd rejection letter. D wasn’t really feeling the BW love & frankly the audition process was truncated & not the best. Onward & upward!!!
@MTMHopeful My son also received a rejection email from BW today. If your daughter did the December 10th audition in New York City I completely agree with your thoughts on the audition process! At this point… onward and upward!!
Same here. My D just got audition-is-a-go email from Wagner. Still waiting on Elon, which will come right on the cusp of NYC Unifieds. Not a bad or good thing, I guess; it is what it is!
@nodaybut2daymom yes- it’s was the same audition. I understand they were under time constraints but maybe schedule fewer auditions?? Not being able to present a monologue definitely did not help. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be! @lincoln56 my D also got her Wagner green light email- so that timing was nice for us! Ending the day on a high note! We too are waiting for Elon @1bamom - I think they said the 19th??
Well not only did they not get to do monologues, Vicky left! I wish we had gone to campus, the result may have been the same , but ar least she would have had full audition. On the other hand, many programs have very limited auditions, and you don’t really know who is in the room. I’m not sure but Otterbein said 2 minutes? I have to look it up. Does anyone know about the BFA acting program at BW? Not sure if we are going to go. We are signed up , but d says she really wanted the musical theatre program. The funny thing is we are academically in several colleges , and I think back to my older “normal admit” children and how happy we would have been to get all these acceptances. We have to realize it’s a fit both ways and hopefully the right program will happen.
@musicmama123 and others I am sorry about your audition experience. I heard that Vicky Bussert was very courteous to audition so I am surprised at your report, but probably it was unavoidable.
I thought they only did on campus auditions (except for Interlochen) Where in New York was the audition held? And maybe you can still do a complete audition on campus if you explain what happened?
