Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

I have heard of 3 Elon prescreen Yes’ today…

BAL to everyone going to the NYC Unifieds this weekend! My D is LA Unifieds…bit of time yet, so we will be thinking about you and sending good thoughts your way!

@momtojoss You have gotten a lot of great advice so far! Honestly, if I were you, I wouldn’t worry too much. Yes, it is a little late in the game to apply to more schools and such (although you could maybe find a non-audition school with rolling admissions). If I were you, I would focus on preparing for the remaining auditions as much as possible. If she does not get the results she wants, she can always re-audition next year. Most student who do this get much better results the second time - they have had an extra year to grow, they know what to expect, and they learn from their mistakes.

There are also many options to ensure you could be better prepared for next time. Look into hiring a national coach, or even look for a local one if you do not have one at all this year. There are several regional audition workshops in the summer and early fall that are great as well. If she does not take voice lessons, now is a good time to start! If possible, look into adding some dance. Your daughter could get a job to help pay for some of it, and save up some spending money for college as well. As many other people have mentioned, it is typical to apply to more schools than five (which I believe is how many you said you applied to). However, applying to as many as 23 is also the exception. A balanced list of about ten schools is sufficient, and with some time and research (this forum is a good source, although always confirm information with schools), you can find a mix of safeties, mid tier schools and the more selective schools that fit with what she wants in a school

I am not saying this to discourage you, or telling you to "give up" on this year already. I am just saying that if it does not work out, it isn't the end of the world. There are several options open to her - she could attend one of her schools as a BA major, and re-audition next year if she wanted. She could major in something completely different and perform on the side. This is an incredibly difficult career path, and if anything this year will teach her to stay strong in the face of rejection. Often it's not about talent, it's about type. There are so many ways to build a career in the performing arts, and as long as she is determined and willing to work hard, there will be a path for her, even if it's not the one you had initially envisioned.

looks like Elon is trying to push MTers into March date because Feb 17th is too full may be able to get a better price on the plane ticket in March. I am kicking myself for not having her get it in sooner but we had so many other schools ,extra essays and the school play.

@MThopeful99 Thanks for the advice and encouragement! I feel like I really dropped the ball on this one. I should have researched more. I don’t know if we could have added any more auditions because of football season…she was on the Color Guard squad and plus had competitions on the weekends. I just keep telling myself to have faith and she will end up where she needs to be. And happy. That’s the main thing!

@momtojoss You might want to pick up the book, I GOT IN! The Ultimate College Audition Guide For Acting And Musical Theatre by Mary Anna Dennard. We didn’t use a coach, and this book has been a lifesaver for us. My husband and I are lawyers and can’t even carry a tune. This MT world was completely new to us! Wishing best of luck to all!

Also, if anyone is auditioning at USC on Friday, could you post your audition experience?? Thanks so much.

@anitapitamom oh we have it and she has read it cover to cover. It has been a great help! We actually had one advisor tell us to get it and it was already in our possession! I wish the best for all also! Such an exciting yet terrifying time!

Just jumping in here about applying to a school after auditioning as a walk-in at Unifieds. My daughter did have to rush home to do two applications after Unifieds. She was told at both of those auditions that she should apply to the school. She was ultimately accepted at both schools both academically and artistically and ended up at Utah which had not been on our radar at all. Stay loose, take some chances and sometimes you can just stumble on the school that was meant for you!

@momtojoss, my daughter applied to only 7 schools and did not use a coach. She did have years of stage experience and voice lessons. She had 2 acceptances and two wait lists. Her top picks at application time changed after the auditions. She had two horrendous auditions at Unifieds and came away not wanting those schools based on the auditors. I am not sure what part of the country you are in but some schools have rolling admissions. I know Uarts accepts applications late and does a prescreen so you go right to callbacks. My daughter’s roommate had zero pro experience and had only done a few high school shows. She is very talented and holds her own among the pro kids.

@Walker1194 Utah is one of a few schools for which my D is hoping to do an MT wak-in in Chicago. As the year has progressed, she is favoring the bigger universities, and her starting list was a bit heavy with medium sized schools. She is bringing her laptop, checkbook, transcript, letters of rec, etc so she may jump right on it, if the occasion arises.

@BeBop1 Thanks! We have only done 6. We live in a small town in So. IL and really don’t have the resources for her to go far away so have kept locales within 5 hrs. She can always transfer after her first year I guess. She has voice lessons but the only experience is her high school shows. Leads in all but that doesn’t mean much. I am not one of those moms that says Oh You are fabulous!, if she isn’t. (I get in trouble for that) But she really is. She just needs a chance. Made me upset that a school thought we were from Chicago. No. We aren’t. She needs a chance!!!

@momtojoss … at this time two years ago, my daughter’s school wasn’t even on her radar yet. At all! My D had a rough go of it for certain, and had many “thanks, but no thanks!”, but when all was said and done, she is now a fantastically happy sophomore at Nebraska Wesleyan.

And LOVES it. And she’ll be the first one to tell you that if someone would’ve told her at the beginning of her senior year of high school, that she’d be living, learning and loving life in Lincoln, Nebraska … she would’ve been looking around for a candid camera.

Did she audition at SIU? (Maybe you’ve posted about it and I missed it!) I know a few kids there who are pretty happy with the MT and Theatre program.

Someone pointed out to me that it’s all about the audition and not where they are from or what they’ve done. So right! I hope I didn’t offend anyone. All these kids need a chance! I am just a whacked out mom and need to chill the heck out.

@KaMaMom I suggested SIU but she refused. Not sure why. Maybe too many from here go there. And it’s so big!! So glad your daughter is happy! Right now I am not happy with Nebraska because they are at the top of the Big 10 standings! Ha!

@momtojoss … lol! But it’s Nebraska WESLEYAN not U of Nebraska.

There are SO many schools that don’t get mentioned here on a regular basis - ones that have happy & successful kids!

I wish you and your kiddo nothing but the best - lots of broken legs for her upcoming auditions!

Is anyone else getting freaked out by this whole process? Like thinking your kid might only have 1-2 choices and that’s it? I’m starting to question whether we chose the right schools & whether I let D audition at enough top tier programs…ugh the second guessing is wearing on me…

Last year my daughter’s coach said that most girls are lucky to have 2 BFA MT choices. But trust me most also wind up where they are supposed to be. My D had three BFA acceptances one acting and two MT, and she’s perfectly happy where she’s at.

You only need one good one!

You will be lucky to have 1 choice!
