Class of 2022 (the journey); sharing, venting, discussing

Yes. MT for Ithaca.

My D is a BSU freshman and she said the first set of offers went out last week as did the BA redirects. I’m guessing that if you haven’t heard then they may be waiting to see who accepts from those that were offered.

I hear you@artskids. My D and I are keeping it to ourselves as well, except for close friends who ask. BTW, thought I was anonymous. Guess not. Won’t be making that mistake anymore!

@mommagutz - you could be! I have my third kid in the process - it’s hard to stay anonymous for that long!

MT at Ithaca her and we have had no news!

Does Ithaca not notify some people at all? We haven’t heard either and the portal is still active.

I am sure you will be notified at some point by Ithaca. If you haven’t heard yet, I’d surmise your child is still being considered. This process is opaque and full of gossip. Believe it when you read it with your own eyes on the school’s letterhead!

Has anyone actually heard from Ball State that had a walk-in and applied afterwards? I’m speculating that’s why we haven’t heard because official school admittance wasn’t until last week and we could be in any category at this point.

Yes, my daughter, who was a walk-in and applied after, has
heard already.

That’s a good point @loribelle. MY D did a walk-in in NY. Maybe that’s why she hasn’t heard.

Oh, now I see @mommagutz’s daughter did a walk-in and she heard already.

This entire process is impossible to comprehend!!!

Does anyone remember what was said about admittance/final number accepted at Ithaca? Wondering how many boys vs girls initially accepted to yield the magic number that IC wants.

@blessedgirl3, I don’t recall Ithaca saying how many offers they will make, but I did take these notes:

1600 apps for 80-85 spots across all programs.
18 MT
18 Acting

I saw a pic of the current seniors on FB as they get ready for their showcase (we have a friend in program) that seems about right

I’ve said this before, but I prefer how several schools notify all applicants at one time, not a dribble here and there to be analyzed and fretted over. Examples of schools that send out all their notifications on one date are NYU/Tisch, CMU, and BOCO.

@soozievt Would you have any idea why some schools prefer to offer on a rolling basis or in batches? I would be curious to know your thoughts

First, let me say that I do not know the answer with any inside information, sorry!

Second, in regular college admissions (not BFA degree programs), some schools have rolling admissions (review of applications as submitted and notified all along the way, with an advantage of applying earlier as the chances are better) and Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision. With Regular Decision (not rolling admissions schools), ALL results go out at one time, often on a date very late in March or on April 1. This was how it was for my D who did not apply for MT. We didn’t spend months fretting. There was a hiatus between application season (which ended Jan. 1) and late March or April 1, when results came out. The dates of the results being released were told in advance pretty much. Again, I am just talking NON MT admissions. In those cases, Rolling admissions lets a school accept or deny students as they go along. But most very selective colleges do not do it on a rolling basis and they read all the applications and make a decision at one time and build a class, which makes sense to me.

Honestly, I think the MT programs should all do that too, but just SOME do that, it seems (like I said, this was done pretty much with NYU, CMU, BOCO and also Penn State when my D applied and seems to still be the case). Then, the applicant basically knows that on such and such date, results for that school will be released, whether admitted, denied, or waitlisted. But the way that some of these MT Programs release results doesn’t necessarily have any pattern that is discernible to those on the outside and I think it just adds to the stress and frenzy (like analyzing why Susie has heard from X program and Johnny has not and what does that mean…good? bad? LOL). Maybe they just do it this way because as they narrow the applicant pool down and are positive they are going to accept or deny a student, they just release that as they go along, before finalizing decisions about those still left on the small pile. Maybe they do this to sorta “snag” the kids they want before those kids hear from their other schools, and so those kids will get sorta “in love” with the bird in hand, while waiting to hear from the rest of their results? After all, they hope to enroll those whom they admit (yield), and so maybe want to get the word out once they have decided on someone. That is only a guess, and only in relation to this MT game, whereas rolling admissions in regular college admissions is based more on WHEN the student applied (not the case here really with the MT thing so much).

Again, just thoughts, but no answers!

@soozievt and @Notmath1. I don’t know why the schools do what they do but I like the fact that at the Penn State audition they said if you didn’t get an interview you were out. At least artistically. It made going to the next audition so much easier. You knew they didn’t want you and you could move on. Also I really applaud the waitlist kids. I know as a parent I would have had some difficulty hanging on the to that hope. It was only yes or no for us. Though I do know several who were on top tier waitlists that made it in.

D1 was the wait list queen - she was on 7 or 8 waitlists 2 years ago. D2 seems to following the same trajectory! Waitlists are great but they really do extend the season!

@artskids And …did you D get off any of those waitlists??

My daughter was also the waitlist queen. She had some wonderful acceptances and was on some amazing waitlists. Sitting through March was nothing - our torture went on until May 1. But here is the thing - waitlists are great. I mean we are talking about schools that have literally thousands of kids audition and they are taking between 6 and 10 girls with a tiny waitlists of 4. Be proud!!! Nothing wrong with a waitlist!!! But it is very hard to wait. And hard to accept that you might not get in off the waitlist. We know a few that just couldn’t commit to other programs because they were so close to the dream. That is very very hard but maybe it’s ok to wait and try again. These are the questions we were grappling with. So it worked out for us and we so happy and grateful to the universe! But I feel for you if you have to hang in there until the bitter end.
