Shouldn’t we be hearing from Elon soon?
@Luciamom so no vocal lessons for MT majors for 2 years at CMU??
Hello All! I’m new to CC and trying to learn a thing or two from this fantastic group before I begin this process next year with my D. I read an article I felt I should share re: UWSP. For those considering University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, you may want to research their recently released plan to cut funding for a great number of their humanities programs and focus on “high-demand career paths” (ie-engineering, business, technology, etc.). I don’t know how it will affect the MT program there, but with the shift in the University’s focus, it certainly would be something to research if UWSP is one of the schools you and your S/D are considering.
Here is a link to one of the many articles that can be found online about this: http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/education/university/controversy-follows-uw-stevens-point-decision-to-cut-humanities-programs/article_e9f59317-6d91-545a-a95e-c64befb44447.html
@singdanceact67 I think Elon told us that they notify all students on March 20th. Not sure if they share MT acceptance news any earlier
@Luciamom - I don’t think that info is correct for Carnegie. I believe that MT kids take both Speech/Alexander and Voice lessons beginning Fall of freshman year.
If I were to check in with Ball State to make sure they haven’t forgotten about me, who would I call?
Right @beachymom I posted a link above with the CMU catalog link. I should’ve identified it properly.

@ohmom2017 That is very interesting. UWSP worked very hard two years ago to try and get my D to attend there. She chose elsewhere, but if she had ended up choosing UWSP, I would be very concerned reading that. Yikes.
@MTdreamz this is the reason I took a break from here. I couldn’t deal with getting sneak previews of what acceptances/rejections were coming, and then stalking her when she got out of school/rehearsal waiting to see if she had any news (or any mail when I was at work). I knew she couldn’t handle it, and it turned out, neither could I
@singdanceact67 @nemom2022 Elon did give out some early acceptances to people that auditioned in the fall
I finally caught up on everyone’s kind words of support, prayers and well wishes. Seriously, y’all are so sweet. I was at work last night, so I couldn’t open all these up and start welling up.
I can’t reply to each thought and question, but I’ll tackle a couple of them.
-It does not have to be a BFA, she has BA auditions that are either pending or has already been rejected.
-She has NO redirects so far. Just flat out rejections, thank you for your interest, and good luck. Almost each school she auditioned for, she also expressed interest in Acting, so not even an option either. One waitlist. I don’t consider an academic acceptance in a school (like Pace) a redirect, or a BA option (that she would entertain, and in that case, I would not be willing to help finance, just so she could ‘be in college’). If a school that has options related to theatre offers her something like that (and this is her only option in the end), we’ll cross that bridge then.
-I know there is more than one path to success in this field. She knows it too, but can’t hear that right now. It’s too fresh and new. If we’re having this conversation in a month or two, (after all decisions and waitlist decisions are made), then we will have to explore other paths. But right now, she is just so defeated. She has always prided herself on knowing exactly what she wanted (to go to college and be in a competitive theatre program), and with absolute plans to achieve it, and it hurts so much that she believes she won’t
be able to do it now.
@DramaQueen219 I’m so sorry my heart is breaking for you and your D. Am I reading your post correctly that she does not have a non-audition BA safety?
Can we start a New discussion with Other programs that are still accepting Video Auditions / applications? I just saw a program that was emailed via accepted today. Stella Adler (hope I spelled this correctly) http://pub.lucidpress.com/stellaadler2017/
@DramaQueen219 I completely understand. I’m so sorry that you’re going through this. Would she be open to applying to other programs? I agree with you. Education is incredibly expensive these days and I too need to justify the price. It’s an investment
There are also programs that start out as a non-audition BA and audition for the BFA second year.
@DramaQueen219 here is another post of another in your shoes.

Lots of advice (I know you didn’t ask for any right now) BUT there are other programs that still have auditions that you’ll miss if you wait until the end. It sounds like your D might be too depressed to pick up and go right now, but if you helped her by doing the leg work on signing up- it could help your D see that when the chips are down, sometimes you regroup and charge ahead. Good luck!!!
@ohmom2017 I finally found the complete list the majors UWSP is cutting and Theatre or MT are not among them.-- at least not yet . . . .The 13 programs that would be eliminated because of low enrollment are: American studies, art (but not graphic design), English (other than English for teacher certification), French, geography, geoscience, German, history (social science for teacher certification would continue), music literature, philosophy, political science, sociology (social work major would continue) and Spanish.
@DramaQueen219 What is your resident state? I will try to send some strong BA recommendations and BA to BFA options in your surrounding area?
@DramaQueen219 I want to be respectful because I completely understand your not wanting advice and ideas right now, but I also don’t want to let that respect keep me from sharing a genuinely great option I’ve noted on CC before: Columbia College Chicago. They have a BFA MT program (as well as an acting program) that you audition for at the end of freshman year (enter as a BA). I’m local, and some of the most talented kids at our very prestigious suburban high school (which has sent kids to all the most competitive programs in the country) have opted to attend Columbia without even applying/auditioning elsewhere (and they can’t imagine being anywhere else). I also have a family member who launched a very successful film career from there. Chicago has a vibrant theater scene, and Columbia folks (faculty and students) are right at the center of it, and check out their list of alums. OK, I’ll stop now. I get how your D is feeling (we were a pile of nerves and anxiety at this time last year), but even a quick visit to their website might lift your D’s spirits. Application deadline is April 1.
