@mteverlasting My D struggles to see herself at the one she was accepted to and yet hates the idea of a gap year. She is holding out hope for the WL schools. I truly wish she would consider a gap year if neither of them come through.
@mteverlasting we were ‘this close’ (because as of 5 days ago, D had no acceptances at all). Now she has three choices (just got another one today; a state school she auditioned for on Saturday). She feels absolutely blessed to have these options now, but does not at all feel like she would be settling for any of them (despite none of them being on her original dream wishlist). She’s visited two of them, and got a good feeling about both of them, and we’re working on securing a visit for the third as we speak).
What is is about the ones he got into that he isn’t feeling? I know the decision is so personal. Is it about reputation/name, campus, size, location? Have you done a pro/con list? For my D, I know she didn’t want to think about going through this whole process again; it took so much out of both of us. But others here have done it. Mine also thrives on structure that others have provided for her (like in her current HS, and the summer programs she’s done). A gap year requires a good amount of self-structure and discipline, to be productive.
@DramaQueen219 I have no doubt how blessed your daughter feels and will be making the most of her opportunity wherever she ends up going! What a great story! Can’t wait to read your final decision!
@LBSMOM I already started the draft. It’s gonna be long and dramatic lol.
@DramaQueen219: But well worth the read. Your and your D’s grace under pressure is exemplary.
Mr.Eggroll thanks! it’s been quite a test.
@DramaQueen219 She heard back from all her schools on March 31. She has 3 acceptances from walk ins and no waitlists. She auditioned for almost 20 schools and she would have been completely happy with any of them. It’s not that she doesn’t want to take a gap year, it’s just not what we were hoping for.
D was kind of new to the MT world. She did everything she could to prepare for this year and it still wasn’t enough. This process is just awful on them.
Looks like my D got off Wagner waitlist? She received an email welcoming her as a Theatre Performance major and added more merit money. Will confirm tomorrow of course. But now have to decide between Suny Fredonia BFA MT and Wagner BA. Thoughts? And yay!
@mteverlasting - this process is AWFUL on them. I completely agree. Your D has 3 acceptances, which is great and she should really be proud of that - what is it about those schools that she doesn’t like or “feel”?
Congrats, @fancytheatrekid !!!
Wondering when the MT class of 2023 thread will be up? Time flies!!!
@mteverlasting I say this from a (now) glass half full approach: she has three options. That’s one, two or maybe three more than some. Since they were walk ins, I get that it didn’t go as planned. My d’s three acceptances are similar (one safety, and two plan B last minute apps). But after the brutal rejections, she is relieved and looking forward to actually going to college in the fall.
Have you visited any of the schools yet, or researched them here? The people here have been so helpful in their feedback about the one school mine for info that we knew nothing about.
You can’t beat the price of Fredonia. The facilities are 2 years old and SUNY put $48M into them and they are first rate. S17 is very happy there. We saw Spring Awakening last weekend and it compared favorably to any other production I have seen of it (about 3).
I don’t know much about Wagner except that it’s on Staten Island…
@techmom99 We went to see Spring Awakening at Fredonia two days ago. It was outstanding! I thought it was better than a couple of the shows at higher ranked schools this season. I had no idea the facilities were so new though I did notice they were high quality. I also heard they are trying to grow the program.
@mteverlasting My D did indeed take a gap year this past year-she had acceptances, but they were to 2 state school safeties, one private in state safety, and 2 walk-ins (that IMHO she shouldn’t have even done-but she was panicking by last February, and I wasn’t in Chicago to talk her down.) She actually committed to one of the in state programs-and then her dad and I pitched the gap year. For us, it was a good choice. Gave us time to create a much better list: Safer schools-sure. But ones that she could see herself at. If you can visit the “birds in hand”-do so. There may be a hidden gem. And your D may really want to go to college this August, and put forth her best effort at her top choice, and do awesome and be happy. But a gap year does have its benefits, and I think it’s a viable choice (strategy, even) given the competitiveness of these programs. Good luck!!!
@fancytheatrekid congrats to your d!! We’ve talked about Wagner. I liked it a lot. I like the SUNY pricetag better
Wagner is in a great location, and the kids take full advantage of the city being nearby. The campus is tiny though (don’t remember if you said you visited, assuming you did?). But cute. Not a lot right there (like stores and other necessities). They do have a lot of city connections.
How does she feel about the locations? Does that matter to her?
Did you take the backstage tour at Fredonia? The equipment and the tools these kids have to work with are top notch. My D, who loved Plattsburgh, told me after our visit to Fred that she was initially disappointed that S17 didn’t go to Plattsburgh, but after having seen Fredonia, watched a show and toured the theater facilities, she wholeheartedly agrees that this is the place for him and that the school is amazing.
She is stressing about the decision. But I know we are lucky to be able to have option to choose. Wagner location is very much desirable for us. Her dad went to Wagner and very much would like her to go there. My D is very torn bc Fredonia is a BFA MT and Wagner is a BA. I think Wagner might have a better name right now, but D said they were disorganized and lackadaisical. But she liked the campus and location very much. And the access to master classes and stuff. She is freaking out a little. It seems like they’ve offered a lot of money $27000 a year plus 10,000 I think. Idk…
(disorganized at the audition)
@fancytheatrekid I wouldn’t worry about the BA vs. BFA in terms of Wagner. When we visited it was explained as an advantage in that it give the individual student the decision how much they want to put into dance or music. It seemed like a fair number of the theatre kids were dance minors. And Wagner has been turning out some grads in Broadway shows - recently one is taking over as Conner in Dear Evan Hansen. The training is important, but it doesn’t have to be a BFA to get it.
Thanks. @MReader Do you have a kid at Wagner?
