@fancytheatrekid congratulations!!! what a way to end this long ride. So happy for you both!
Congratulations @fancytheatrekid!!!
I think my favorite thing about this year is that (if I’m not mistaken) in the end, no one got shut out!!! (Correct me if I’m wrong!) There were a number of people with a long string of rejections who were facing the need for a gap year or plan B…but then in the end, one or more acceptances came through! So happy to see everyone find their place!
Yes! What a relief! And she came off a waiting list!
Congrats @fancytheatrekid!!! What a perfect ending!
Congratulations @fancytheatrekid and so happy for your D on her birthday @onewaytobroadway! It’s so nice to be done - I keep stressing myself thinking we’ve got more work to do but… we don’t. Yay!
@fancytheatrekid - Congratulations!!! I am so happy your D found a great program!
@onewaytobroadway I’ll keep my fingers crossed for more scholarship money! Congratulations and belated Happy Birthday to your D!
@actorparent1 I think (and hope) you are correct. I literally felt like my d was the last one. I had been in touch privately with many in that ‘club’. I am grateful to have had their support during all this.
@fancytheatrekid, even though I already know it, I’m looking forward to your story in the other thread. I’m getting ours ready; we’re almost there!
I just want to say a quick thank you to all of you who have shared thoughts and experiences. As a parent of a 10th grader, this thread is a wonderful resource. (and might I add a bit overwhelming, lol)
@sunnygold- you should also read the BFA- Acting thread. Both have really helpful information that isn’t always Acting vs MT specific.
I read a few of the final decisions and noticed that some students cancelled auditions after they passed some prescreens. For future parents: don’t do that. While prescreens are a small affirmation of talent, they are in no way a prediction of acceptance. I asked Pace during my D’s audition a few years ago how many prescreens they passed and the answer was 800 for 25 spots!!! I know CMU is now requiring prescreens but they are still only accepting 10-12 of the 400 who passed the prescreens. It’s great and confidence-building, but the odds really are still very tough on getting an acceptance. I say lay all of the cards on the table and then pick the ace when you have options.
@sunnygold it sure is overwhelming! But the support here is amazing. I’m not just saying that because I’, writing this publicly, lol. I was hesitant at first, to express my stress here. I had to take a break for a bit. But when I came back, and expressed how I was feeling, I got an outpouring of love and support, both on and off the public pages. I’ve connected with people from all areas, and people who have kids at our (almost) committed school
@sunnygold - I actually was uplifted many times when I’d hear about someone else’s callback or acceptance. It was nice to feel some happiness during the several weeks when my S wasn’t hearing anything back.
My daughter and I just returned from our trip to visit the school that would give her the chance to study both performance and production. She loved the program! The school itself is huge so that was a little overwhelming but the program seems to be a really good fit. She goes to a performing arts high school. The director of her drama program has approached her to work with him this summer during the summer intensive on a writing project and assist him with the program. This would be a great thing for her. He told her she has a maturity, talent and insight into writing that he hasn’t seen in a kid her age! She wrote a scene for school that was performed by classmates last week. Her dad and I were blown away by what she did. We knew she was a talented actress and singer but never imagined she was capable of writing a scene like she did. We have a renewed sense of peace. It lets us know that her instincts of moving away from only performing and adding writing and directing to her skills was a good thing. It is nice to be on this side of senior year! Now we just rush to make it all official by Tuesday!
Need quick advice: D was accepted to one small MT program and WL for two of her top choices. Due to a glitch in the high school not sending her transcripts, a 4th school, Hartt, sent an email which sparked many email exchanges asking for her transcripts. They have been sent and received today. They will send a decision via mail on Monday (ugh!). We really would like to visit, Monday. It’s a 5 hour drive. The admissions counselor said she might be able to let D know via email on Monday. In addition to all of this, D is in a show that opens two weeks from tonight. She cannot miss any rehearsals between now and then. Should we just make the trip on Monday? I feel like she is most likely accepted BUT it was also the only one that we did not visit and instead sent in her audition. I will be very happy to make the trip if she is accepted, even if she decides to go with the small school while waiting for WL schools BUT if she is rejected, welllll, what a complete and utter waste of our time to make the drive and pay for the hotel etc. Thoughts?
@theaterlove3 that is a tough one. Don’t you just wish they could tell you if she was artistically accepted? They obviously know this already. Can she actually miss school/rehearsal on Monday? I assume her director knows the situation she is in (but I do understand her not wanting to miss, so close to opening; mine would feel the same way).
Also, don’t underestimate the power of a digital submission: my d’s one waitlist and one of her (only three) acceptances was via digital submission.
How does she feel about her one acceptance? How do ‘you’ feel about putting down a deposit on that one, and potentially losing it is she really likes Hartt (if you wait a bit to go)? I am hoping Hartt will give you more than a day to decide, given the circumstances.
I don’t envy either one of you now. I can only imagine how stressful your weekend is going to be.
@DramaQueen219 No rehearsal on Monday, the only off day of the week. The next day she could go is May 21. The students will already have gone home. She is disappointed about the one acceptance. It’s a solid program but not what she what she envisioned for herself. The deposit is $100 which in the scheme of things is quite affordable. Who knew I would be willing to spend $100 so easily. I guess the dilemma is more about taking advantage of squeezing in one possible visit while students are still in session for a school that may or may not accept her. Ha! I laugh as I type that because of other visits we did to schools that didn’t accept her. I think I am leaning toward the visit.
@theaterlove3 I laugh at all that too. Some we visited twice (once before and again for on campus auditions $$$$$$). We literally only visited one school after she got in (the one with the video submission, because we hadn’t visited it ever). Now that I’m crunching the numbers for upcoming tuition and housing, I’m thinking of all the money we could have saved. Oh well…
Anyway, sounds like you’re heading to Hartford on Monday
@theaterlove3 - As long as you can deal with the fallout if you visit Hartt, she falls in love, and then they reject her, I say go visit.
If you can get up there Sunday, I see they have performances of the musical “Little Women” at 2 pm and 7 pm. (I always like to see a show at schools we’re considering if possible.) Just fyi!
