Class of 2023 Decisions

@chunkylegs thanks… all that is there is the two lines enrollment confirmation and UFID… maybe next week… thanks

@tippy46 Only you can decide if you made the right choice. From a financial standpoint, many on here (me included) think UF is a slam dunk vs. Penn State for a Florida resident. Bymany measures, UF is seen as a better school, but the cost savings is significant – perhaps $100,000 or more! I don’t know who is paying your bills, but that’s a lot of money that if you put in the bank it could go toward a top graduate school or even a down payment on a house down the road.

As to making the decision, nothing is better than visiting the campuses and seeing what it is like. The high temperature in State College tomorrow will be 37 degrees – that’s the high! If you have lived in Florida your whole life, do you want to experience that? Perhaps you do.

More importantly, what is the culture? Is it inclusive enough for you? After you visit, can you see yourself going to school there?

My daughter did a pre-college program at UF a couple summers ago. She spent a week on campus. After that, it was game over. She was all-in on UF. She mentally moved in. Thankfully, she was accepted and is now at her dream school.

You need to make the decision that is best for you.

UF says applicants who apply after the deadline can be admitted on a space available basis. Has anyone ever gotten in that applied after the deadline?

Was at a tour earlier this week and they said the essays was a large factor in accepting students for class of 2023.

Basically the admin person stated that a ton of people called after the decisions came out asking why their child didn’t get in and they pointed to the essay every single time.

The essay is important, more important than SAT/ACT test scores, but a lot of factors are considered. I’m sure everyone didn’t get rejected due to the essay. Holistic admissions is messy/complicated. :-??

@mfd0513 I’m sorry to hear your daughter didn’t get into UF. We are OOS and my son applied to many of the same schools as your daughter, Clemson, Georgia, Alabama, UW Madison.

If you don’t mind me asking, what scholarship or merit aid did she receive for UW Wisconsin? If she is pursuing the business route, Wisconsin is statistically as good of a school as Florida. It’s the scholarship is a fair amount, it may be a good school to pursue There are very few merit scholarships for UW Madison. In fact, this is the first I’ve heard of it.

My son only received 15k from Clemson and Presidential from Alabama.

@SpiderMonkee @mfd0513 yes can you please share merit from UW as I too have not heard of any… as I know and have seen you need to advocate and fill out scholarship applications there to hopefully get some. As an OOS parent I can feel for all the instate parents whose child did not get in… this is a tough process… I’m not here to create any advocacy but I do have to say that each state and each HS has its own rigor… while someones OOS scores might be lower than in state, that OOS child’s HS might be much more rigorous than others… My son like all worked very hard. We used naviance as a guideline and it has been fairly spot on with the exception of some near impossibles… Good Luck to all… all children will create their own path and find their successes…

@PsychoDad10 We experienced the same screwup. Emailed as soon as we saw the decision(and said, “what the…?” To their credit, they responded right away but only to say to call on the Monday and have it fixed in the sytem. Called and were told application was marked that my son was graduating with an AA (even thought we reviewed about 10x). Were told they would update that entry in the application and would re-evaluate his application as on “on time” applicant and would not be penalized for it. System was updated with a denial letter a few days later. My kid was devastated.

Looking at stats of many of those accepted, I can only think we were fed a line and he was declined because all spots in his major were filled. He had way above average SAT score, ranked in top 8% of class, Participated in a wide range of activities, leadership, volunteering, Bright Futures FAS, very strong essay (not my opinion, but of others with knowledge of UF’s practices).

He was accepted at Georgia Tech and UCF Burnett Honors. Can’t afford GA Tech OOS even though it was his dream school but will get a free ride at UCF. Burnett was the clincher with smaller class sizes, abundant internship opportunities surrounding the campus and personal mentoring. He may decide to transfer to UF but honestly, he has a bad taste in his mouth right now about the whole thing. UF does have name recognition as many have mentioned but I’m confident that my son will do just fine in life because of his drive and personality. I know many who have graduated from UCF and now have extremely successful careers.

@Salchipapa S was accepted to both U of F and UCF (Burnett Honors College). He decided to attend UCF and absolutely loves it. He’s a sophomore in the mechanical engineering program, and he already has a year-long, well-paid internship with Mitsubishi-Hitachi’s North American HQ in Lake Mary (about 25 minutes from UCF), which he started in November 2018. He works there 15-20 hours a week during the school year, and 40 hours during vacation breaks (and is looking at 40 hours/week this summer). I believe your son would do well if he decides to attend UCF.

@VABogart Yes, he just committed after getting over the rejection:) I do have a high regard for Burnett and the internship prospects and their proximity to the school, so much more so than through UF. Great to hear about your son’s experiences. My son will be majoring in aerospace engineering. I think the UCF campus is much nicer as well as residences and know he will thrive there. It took him a few days to get over the rejection but seems to be full speed ahead now. I know it was meant to be and it’s not worth our time trying to sort out whatever weird thing happened with his UF application, even though it seems like we weren’t the only ones with the same issue. He is also crazy about the Knights football team and the abundance of intramural sports he can participate in.

@Luska19 - Take heart, there were 9000 applicants to the honors program this year, with only 700 slots available - so it was super competitive with an acceptance rate of 8%. You will have an opportunity during the summer after your Freshman year to apply to the University Honors Program via lateral admission, as long as your UF GPA is at least 3.5. So hang in there and the best of luck to you!

@Luska19 - I saw the post that you got into honors, congrats!

@CollegeFever13 Thank you very much. Looking forward to summer B!

Just a few words from a smart kid…my son didn’t get accepted. 34 ACT, 4.3 GPA. UF was first choice by far.
When we found out he said these words, “well Dad that wasn’t meant to be”. I have always known he was a smart kid but now know he is a wise one as well. Off to Purdue for Engineering School. Would have loved UF but we should all be proud of these kids and their amazing accomplishments. They will succeed if we let them………

@FLGDAD Good for your son and good for you! All the best in the future!

I always have seen this, when bad things happen to good people, there is a strong reason. Some great things have to happen for you, but somewhere else and something different than you planned. Remember the Mel Gibson movie “Signs”?

@FLGDAD You raised a good one! Congratulations to your son, he’s going to accomplish great things with that attitude.

@Salchipapa can you plz rescind your GT offer! I’m waiting for decision still but missed ED. Regular Decision is like 9% acceptance. :frowning:

@somebody or anybody. Post a declined essay. I’d like to see if this makes sense. For someone in STEM this is crap. We should be literate and be proficient in professional writing but not to craft masterpiece in literature.

@Likebikes, I don’t think the idea is that the student has to write a literary masterpiece. I think idea is that the student has to show how they are different from everyone else (particularly those with similar grades/test scores/ec’s). What makes them unique? What is their passion? But, that is just my impression. I have nothing to base that on other than what I have read in various boards.
