@jd91200 , admissions stats are available on the PSU website. You should google Penn State Admissions Statistics and youāll find it. Regardless, here they are:
UNIVERSITY PARK
High School GPA (4.0 scale) 3.55-3.97
SAT/ACT Range 1250 - 1430 / 28 - 32
OTHER PSU CAMPUSES (2+2)
High School GPA (4.0 scale) 3.07-3.60
SAT/ACT Range 1070 - 1290 / 23 - 28
To get admission to the more competitive colleges at UP (business, engineering, nursing, etc.), you really want to be closer to the top range of the above stats and make sure youāve taken some solid AP/IB/College level coursework in high school. If you are below the mid-range, consider checking off a summer start date and/or applying via DUS.
(The exception to this are a few select direct-admit programs like nursing. You canāt transfer into the nursing program from DUS. Direct admit only, which is why a lot of those students have weighted GPAs of 4.0 or higher and high rigor.)
So what happens to the kids like my triplet daughters who have over a 4.0 GPA with honors and AP classes and are in the top 5% of their class, but get a 1200 on their SATs? They are above the average GPA but below the SAT. They did check summer start. Do you think they will get summer start at UP or satellite campus?
@Gcbranscome , no one can really give you a firm answer, but I think a top 5% coupled with the rigor and GPA would lean in their favor. Did they all apply DUS or did they pick a specific college?
@Gcbranscome Iām a triplet too! Unfortunately, none of my sisters are applying to Penn State. I also have about the same stats as your daughters. I wish them luck!
Ok, the forum āateā my first reply when I tried to edit.
Wow, triplets! I feel 2/3 of your pain! I have b/g twins. Both have ~4.2W/3.85UW GPAs with lots of Honors and APs. Son has a slightly higher SAT in the 1300s and was admitted to UP for Engineering in November with a summer start (his first choice). Daughter is waiting on an EA decision at a different school for their direct-admit DPT program. Her SAT is just below what they ālikeā but her GPA is higher plus she has many good ECās. Dying a slow death as they are due to release via mail this week (no online portal announcements). She already has 3 other admits to other programs, but this is the āoneā and the mailman just left us emptyhanded for the day. I cannot imagine having a third in this process! Best of luck to you and your girls!

Has anyone seen any historical data distinguishing the average GPAs and SATs for Penn State/UPās in-state vs. out-of-state admitted students? My son is applying in-state, but there are at least a few state schools in the Northeast where it is now easier to get in from out-of-state, because they are using the extra revenues from those higher tuitions to underwrite (and keep in check) in-state tuitions.
In this case, your daughters have an advantage than if it was the other way around. PSU decisions are 2/3 GPA and 1/3 test scores and other factors. So itās better applying to Penn State with a higher GPA/lower SAT than a higher SAT/lower GPA. Pitt is the oppositeā¦they like higher test scores over PSU. This is why sometimes, kids get into one or the other, not both.
I would expect your daughters to get into UP with a top 5% GPA for their class and heavy rigor. But it truly depends on the major.
Has anyone been rejected? I see acceptances and acceptances to the 2+2 which we wonāt do. My son has already been accepted to Pitt but PSU is his #2 (FSU is his #1). If PSU doesnāt work out, off we go to Pittsburghā¦
I GOT IN!!! SOOO EXCITED!

@Ohoh1221 same here. We know kids who were offered 2 plus 2 which my son wonāt do either. My son loves both PSU and FSU. I have another son at FSU and in the end, the weather won him over. Waiting on both schools here as well. Good luck to you.
If you donāt want to do 2+2 (which, from OOS, makes sense), you can ask to be considered for summer session + DUS or summer session+ a similar major from another college. Note that unless youāre DUS you canāt switch to Smeal or Engineering at orientation, but you can switch from anything to anything else beside those.
So, instead of Smeal, you could apply for Agribusiness (college of Ag) or economics (CLA). Or you could apply for a Chinese major or Labor relations or any major only offered at UP. You could then switch from that at any point, to anything beside Smeal or Engineering.
@beach1234 thank you! Same to you! Wish I would hear one way or the other. Itās an all day thing w PSU. At least w FSU we know that all decisions are released in one day 1/30. PSU is just torture with the drop by drop decisions!
My Son applied on Nov 15th
Got Accepted around Nov 27th (before TG holiday) with GAP in Business school for MS and MBA program
GPA 4.37/4.00, ACT 36 (1st try), SAT Math (790) lots of ECās and we are OS
2nd rank in a school of 427 kids
No info of getting into Schreyer school or Merit yet. Can anyone suggest if similar application date received anything
