Very disappointed receiving the 2+2 plan. Is it true you can email Penn State to be considered for another major at UP? I have heard that.

It never hurts to try. Did you choose summer start?

My son was accepted to the 2+2 plan, starting at Berks. Calling today to see if there is a waitlist option for UP as the remote campus isn’t an interest for him. Has anyone else gone through this before?

Just curious, did he request summer admission if not accepted into UP? That is what my daughter did, but we still haven’t heard back yet.

@curioustyler @WestchesterNYdad There is no option for a ā€œwaitlistā€ at UP (at least there hasn’t been in the past). There are a few options:

  1. call admissions and ask to be re-considered for the SAME major (Smeal) as a summer start. (Just so you know, Smeal is one of the MOST competitive majors to get into as a freshman).

  2. call admissions and ask to be re-considered in DUS (undecided) for a fall start. (There are minimal advantages to starting Smeal vs. DUS - everyone needs to complete the same entrance-to-major (ETM) classes and you can do them from Smeal pre-major or DUS).

  3. call admissions and ask to be re-considered in DUS AND summer start.

Look at your GPA/SAT/ACT and see where you fall vs. the middle 50%. If you are towards the bottom, option 3 might be your best bet. Remember GPA is 2/3 of the decision … and that includes rigor (Honors/AP).

With a 3.3 uw and a 1250, you are below the middle 50 for both. Unless the HS is known for grade deflation and that includes a strong number of APs, he will really need a hook.

Summer start is a great option… while kids originally don’t think they want to give up their summer, they get a massive jumpstart on being a college kid. They manage two classes (each class meets every day) with small class size (24 kids), learn the dorms, the dining hall, the campus, and how to manage a roommate. Additionally, many kids take English 15 (freshman English) over the summer - this class can be a lot so easier to get it over in summer.

If you call Admissions, they have a prompt on their telling you how to send an email to ask to be re-considered. I would do that TODAY if you don’t want a commonwealth campus start. I don’t know if that kicks you into priority (or later) bucket or when you will hear, but it will get the process started.

Thank you for the advice! My son did take several AP and college level credit classes - he was a slow starter and really picked things up in his junior year. We were disappointed in not getting University Park but I get it.

Thanks again for the suggestions re: alternatives.

@lucyvanpelt I retook the SAT on December 7th because I got deferred from Pitt. However, I decided I wanted to send my scores to all of my top choices (Penn State, Delaware, Purdue, Pitt). If I don’t get into Penn State with my current score, can I asked to be reconsidered with my new score? I am applying as a nursing major with a 4.2w, 3.76uw GPA and a 1180 SAT.

@sarah2001Hey Sarah, the answer is yes. If you don’t get into Main Campus through early action with your current test scores, then you can call and ask to be reconsidered as a regular decision applicant. When they review your application with all of the other regular decision applicants, they will consider your new test scores.

we just heard back today on my son’s Early Action application, unfortunately my son got Harrisburg campus for DUS, so I too have that same question. Can you get reconsidered for UP in the regular decision pool?

@lucyvanpelt where is this chart to look at to see if you are above or below the 50%?
