That’s a rumor that’s floated several times every year. They defer lots of people because the EA acceptance is 20% or lower, on 40,000+ EA apps, and UMich fills roughly 50% of their class in EA and 50% in RD.
There’s only so much room “at the Inn.”

That’s unknown. No one here on CC (generally high stat students) posted an EA rejection in the last couple years, at least that I can remember.
I won’t be surprised if I get denied, but U-M is a target for me, so I’m thinking I have a chance.
Not going to lie, seeing the stats of all of you that applied has definitely made me lose some of my confidence. I have a gpa of 3.95, but my sat is only a 1340. I don’t have many EC other than baseball, national honors society, and volunteer work. Im latino and of the first to attempt to attend a university, so I hope they can overlook the fact that my sat is not extremely impressive.
Per the UMich CDS, being a “First Generation” is considered “important” as an admissions factor.
I am crazy nervous about this. I really want to get in cause this will be my first admission decision back and I want to feel comfortable knowing that I will at least be going to college.
@Classof2020P also I am with you on that. The stats and backgrounds of a lot of these applicants are unreal. I am definitely expecting a rejection now.
Dear UMich Admissions,
Please consider adding ED- in a way that is different from other schools. ED at Michigan would not offer higher rates of admission, simply an earlier admissions decision in December. UM should continue to use EA, but move the decision date to January so that those receiving ED elsewhere would have plenty of time to withdraw applications and receive financial aid packages before the EA decisions are released and therefore protect UMich’s yield.
This would not only protect yield, but it would also allow the highest achieving students for whom UMich is their top choice to clearly demonstrate that to UMich admissions and to not be penalized because the admissions officers aren’t sure if UMich is their first choice.
@Classof2020P - I live in a rural county in Michigan. At least one first generation student from my high school gets in every year with a high GPA and 1200-1250 SAT. (A lot lower than you!). I think you have a good chance!
Is it true that Michigan mostly accepts alumni/big donator’s kids EA? Heard that rumor going around.
Most likely coming out either tomorrow or Friday
@fearkinglear why don’t you think it will be today?
I really don’t think it’s friday because that’s when they close for the holidays. Almost sure that it’s today or tomorrow, most likely tomorrow
Anyone else getting a “This Application is Currently Being Updated. Please Check Back Soon.” message on the Enrollment Connect?
I’m getting: “Early action decisions are currently being processed. You will receive an email when your decision has been released, no later than December 24th.”
Nope but I hope you’re not trolling and please post on here if you get a decision so we can all check.
I will - I wish I could post a screenshot.
Just curious as to why people speculate that OOS seem to have less of a Chance of getting in? Seems like Having the school getting kids paying out of state rates would be more beneficial. All things being equal of course
I wish Michigan would release their decision date earlier so there is none of this guessing and we would just know the date. I know MIT and Georgia tech do this and it’s much better
My portal has the same message as before.
