“Out-of-state students lead way to increase in University of Michigan enrollment”

https://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/2019/10/out-of-state-students-lead-way-to-increase-in-university-of-michigan-enrollment.html

@sushiritto -Any insight into The School of Kinesiology? At one point on their website, they posted the “middle fifty” SAT scores from a few years ago. Those scores were slightly under the general SAT middle fifty of UMich. My son has applied OOS so, I know any info. at this point is just for a deeper understanding of the admissions process. Within Kines there are four distinct majors so, even general Kines stats may not really give us much to hang onto when seeing how our son might fit into the pool of applicants. Any thoughts about general admissions to the school of Kines would be appreciated…there just doesn’t seem to be a lot of information out there…

@LocoTaco As you surmised, information on Kinesiology is very thin. But last year’s small group of Kinesiology posters were a fervent bunch. They were very active posters.

For the Class of 2022, UMich Kinesiology enrolled 166 students, which based on the overall yield, maybe twice that number in acceptances. I don’t know if the Kinesiology class grew, but the Class of 2023 was larger than the Class of 2022 (see link in previous post).

Here’s one opinion. Since Kinesiology has so few acceptances (comparatively to LSA and CoE) during RD, I’d speculate that they must fill up a sizable portion of their class during EA and most applicants that are accepted, do enroll. Seems like Kinesiology at UMich is a high yield bunch, based on the extremely small sample size here on CC.

Here’s what I recorded on CC for the Class of 2023:

February RD “wave”: zero (0) acceptances.
March RD “wave”: two (2) acceptances.

The stats for those two acceptances in March were:

  1. In-state uwGPA 3.9/SAT 1,430
  2. OOS no GPA given/SAT 1,440

Other Kinesiology posters here on CC:

  1. Rejected OOS no GPA/SAT 1,430
  2. Waitlisted OOS uwGPA 3.8/SAT 1,390
  3. Deferred uwGPA 3.9/ACT 30/no final determination posted
  4. Deferred uwGPA 3.9/SAT 1,450/no final determination posted

As you can see the info is limited, partly because there aren’t many spots in each class at UMich. What I would say, IMO, is that the stats of the Kinesiology applicants appear to be at or below the median of the overall class of applicants. Again, extremely limited sample size. I hope this helps.

I also hope this year’s EA class (Class of 2024) will post their stats, whether accepted, deferred or rejected, since last year’s EA posters here on CC didn’t post much info at all.

Thank you! This was more that I found when looking for info. on Kines.

Hi! I also applied to Ross!

For the last couple years during this time of year, I have come here to CC to see what’s up. I enjoy the nostalgia while reflecting back on my own college search journey. I enjoyed the college search process, and traveling down this particular memory lane is pretty cool.

I first learned of my EA acceptance to UM through the school’s portal on Dec. 20, 2017 around 10AM.

Here’s the word for word email (other than my name) that I received 12 hours later on the same day.

Again, congratulations on your admission to Michigan!

GO BLUE!"

The number of EAs deferred came up early. Someone told me that almost all the OOS EAs were deferred last year b/c there were just too many applications. Is that true? If so, I would imagine the same this year. Just curious.

@ROSSX2 , transferring into Ross is very hard, but I have definitely seen people do it!

@CAEngineer I just wrote the below on the prior page:

of Applications:

Class of 2022 64,917
Class of 2023 64,972

Applications have steadily increased over the years, but almost no change from the last admissions cycle. For the Class of 2022, there were roughly 40,000 EA apps submitted. UMich accepted about 7,500-8,000 of those EA apps (about half of all acceptances) and the rest, roughly 32,000, were deferred or rejected. Most speculate that the majority of those EA apps are deferred. And it’s not for the lack of computers, facilities or people, IMO.

FWIW, my OOS (CA) kid was accepted EA in December 2017.

@sushiritto “UMich accepted about 7,500-8,000 of those EA apps.” Of those, do you know what numbers and percentage that were OOS vs. in-state? Are they trying to accept as many in-state during EA as possible? I am not questioning their right to do that, just curious on the numbers.

That’s a good question for which I do not have an answer.

Received this today … standard email, or something to be implied? OOS, double legacy, S: ACT 34, GPA 4.2, strong recs, essays, many ECs. Already 4 EA acceptances.

We are delighted to receive an application from **** to the University of Michigan! This is an exciting and understandably anxious time in your family’s life, and we want to acknowledge the support you have given Noah as they consider life after high school.

Whether you or a relative attended Michigan, your family is new to the university, or you or your family are avid fans of U-M, we value your student’s interest and the encouragement you’ve offered them throughout the challenging college application process.

We realize that applying to a highly selective school like Michigan can add additional pressure to young people during their busy senior year of high school. We also know that having a close relationship with Michigan, being the first in their family to forge a path to college, or a myriad of other factors can amplify stress during this decision waiting period.

While we can’t yet predict the outcomes of the admissions process, this year we’ve taken a big step toward clearer and more personal communication with students about their application. **** can log into our new Enrollment Connect portal to see their application status and next steps, if any, that they should take in the process. Since your student qualified for Early Action, they will receive an initial decision by Dec. 24.

If you have any further questions about our processes or timeline, you can find answers on our “Ask Us” website.

Again, thank you for your family’s interest in the University of Michigan.

@bh8690 , I’ve the received the same email!

We too received that message . . . hopeful it means more, but unfortunately it is probably just a standard message :frowning:

Wee too received that message - probably standard

It is a standard message. I, as a mom, received it too. Do your kids have any actions in their portal that they have to take care of? Just curious.

Michigan is probably more nebulous in the application process than any other school … frustrating. Hoping double legacy still carries some weight in support of a very strong application.

FWIW re: Legacy

https://www.insidehighered.com/admissions/article/2019/03/25/u-michigan-says-it-doesnt-consider-legacy-status-admissions-some

We also received that email. It came to my email, I’m not sure if it also went to my S20’s email.
Sounds like Legacy does help. They ask about it on the application, so it seems like they’re interested.

We also received the email and we aren’t hooked in any way. D20 said she was completely unaware of anything new on her portal page.
