Class of 2024 Early Action Thread

re: legacy
In their CDS, it says it’s “considered”. Same category as extracurriculars or volunteer work.

We got the email too. Pretty sure it went to all EA applicants/families. Did anyone NOT get it?

We received the same email. I get the sense that UM is trying to provide a more transparent and personal experience for applicants and their parents than in previous years. I gather that UM was criticized for the opacity of their process in the past, and I guess they are trying to improve that process as a result.

Received the same email - and really appreciate that UM is trying to be open about the process - the best among all the EA colleges that DS applied.

We got the same email. I have been more involved in the process than my wife. She didn’t realized it was stressful. Now she’s stressed.

Re: Legacy

Yes, it is, “alumni relation” is listed as “considered,” along with seven (7) other non-academic factors, including geography, volunteer work, work experience, EC’s, talents, etc.

IMO, being a legacy will not overcome “less-than-stellar” stats, essays, and a HS’s track record of acceptances and yield. While at the same time, UMich has been attempting to increase their first gen and/or Pell Grant student population as well.

We had at least a couple or few legacies deferred and rejected in the last cycle. The UMich official in that link did say legacy status is no longer a factor in admissions, so maybe they haven’t updated the CDS. The Class of 2023 CDS has not been posted yet.

100% agree

And I see what you mean. Reading the entire article (rather the just the piece you quoted) does make it sound like it’s a recent change. The interviewer even pointed out that the website still says legacy status is “considered”. And the UMich spokesman seemed to indicate they need to update the website. Date of article is March 2019.

Yet the website today still says it is considered…
“ Is being a legacy applicant a factor in U-M’s holistic review process?

Although not a primary factor in admissions decisions, having a parent, step-parent, grandparent, or sibling who attended the University of Michigan is considered during the holistic review process. Legacy status is not a preference in the admissions process but does serve as context - outside of the admissions review - in understanding a student’s interest. Most importantly, it helps us to appropriately manage our class size. Information about a student’s status as a legacy can also be used to acknowledge their relationship to U-M in communications with families during both the application process and when it renders their admissions decisions.”

So…mixed signals.

Hi! We did not get it the email on 11/26. I checked my email, my daughter’s and husband’s.

Check in Spam Folder(s). Sometimes emails end up there. BTW, this mail does NOT go to the Student’s email, only Parents’/Guardians’ email listed in the Application.

Nope. Not in my spam either.

Did you apply on or before Nov. 1 to qualify for Early Action?

I am so nervous for decisions to come out! does anyone else who applied have similar stats as me? 1290 SAT and 4.0 unweighted GPA. I am scared that will not be good enough for me to be admitted…

I’m an out-of-state student who’s applying to Ross so I have absolutely no idea. Ross is literally the hardest to get into and i’m not getting my hopes up

I did not receive this email but I am unsure if my parents did. This is a little bit worrying. Portal says my application is to be reviewed for EA. Did any students applying get this email or was it only parents?

Nevermind, just read that it only goes to parents. Disregard.

@RaLaSrSa On there application, students can choose whether or not to let guardians be contacted in regards to the application. She may have opted out.

@hmilo394 I saw in prior years a FEW with these stats get in. My son has the same stats as you. In-State & looking to get into kinesiology. Good Luck!!! ?

Yeah, hopefully essays or letters of rec will help too! My friend got in with a 25 ACT.

Momzilla2D,
Your buckeye logo gives you away. Is your child really interested in UMich?

@hmilo394 Are you instate? That will help. Also, do you live in an underrepresented city or county? That will also help. And third, are you part of any underrepresented group - 1st generation, Native American, etc? At our high school (rural county) immigrant students with your stats get in every year. Hope that makes you feel a little better. (Your state, county, and city are important factors in what kind of test scores they are expecting.)
