A couple of comments. Michigan does give financial aid to OOS students
It might not be the same amount as instate but they have increased their help over the last 3-4 years. Many are getting like $30-35,000. They were called Michigan Grant’s or something similar. I know a few students on half to full scholarships also.
You can’t change your application midstream. Once you pick your major it’s yours till your admitted. Then after the first semester to first year you can switch majors. If starting in engineering and want to switch to LSA just a note. All first years take their classes together. I would stay in engineering and see what it’s about first. Kids have no clue until their in it. Most engineering students don’t really have a clue what engineering is till like their junior year.
@Umichhopeful333… Not nice. ?Not in the spirit of this thread. She’s already in. (Congrats by the way). Now she needs to talk with financial aid and make it work. There are lots of department scholarships once your attending also. Also 2 in college helps with financial aid.
My son is a senior at UMich. His roommate was also rejected at UIUC (instate). Maybe they practice yield policies, too. Anyway, he told me getting rejected at UIUC was the best thing that ever happened to him!?
UIUC about 3 years ago started to accept more instate kids since the parents and others were making a big deal about it and rightfully so. My son’s a junior at Michigan and was accepted to UIUC for Engineering. Talking to some of this friends at UIUC he is so thankful that he is at Michigan. Without going into it Michigan will stand behind your child and help them grow. If the kid takes some initiative they will pretty much do anything to help your child become successful. FYI.
My son was deferred for engineering (CS) OOS. Does Michigan outright reject EA students, or just defer with the likelihood of ultimately being rejected in the RD round? I’ve only seen one person post here with a rejection from EA. Thanks so much!
Accepted!!

NMSF, 4 APs (taking 2 this year), KY All-State Choir, 2nd-degree black belt, cellist in local collegiate orchestra, etc.
This is so encouraging to hear. I’m glad UMich didn’t ding DS for lack of demonstrated interest because we just couldn’t get a campus visit fit in our schedule. But, I’m convinced that UMich has a great CS and Engineering program and will be a good fit for DS.

Deferred is not rejected. My DD2020 was OOS EA Deferred from LSA. Followed up with LOCI, Fall Transcript and some more info regarding here ECs. All helped. She go an acceptance in almost the final wave towards end of March. She is having a wonderful time in Ann Arbor. Highly productive and successful education. So if you all have your eyes set on followup and you’ll increase you chances. All the best

Strong Why Michigan - was able to shadow two classes last year. Lots of great detail about the film television and media department. Pretty obvious Mich is my first choice but never stated that directly.
Strong Common App Essay
First rec - 7/10 passionate English teacher. Did fairly well in his class but didn’t know him too personally
Second Rec - 9/10 math teacher who I’ve known for years. Knows me extremely well inside and outside of the class room
Third Rec - 10/10 - arts teacher that can comment both on my personality, and knows my deep appreciation for the arts.
Brother is a junior at U of M
Writing a LOCI and will submit my first semester grades that are the best semester of high school I’ve ever had.
THIS MIGHT BE A DUMB QUESTION BUT how do I know if UMich requested my first semester senior grades. Do they want everyone to submit these? Mine would probably be sent around February but are they only sent if I ask my counselor to do so? I can’t find anywhere on my checklist of UMich asking for my updated grades. I have a 3.976 unweighted GPA right now so I would rather keep that for evaluation in RD. I was deferred EA to LSA.
Michigan says they admit by school, but I can’t help but think that they may consider major as well. Something like film sounds very popular and may be more competitive. Your stats seem on point, so that’s my only guess.

My son is very excited to be accepted to Michigan. It’s his first choice. However, we’re not sure if he’ll get enough scholarship/financial aid money to attend. The Ohio State University has already offered him a full tuition scholarship.
I am sure there are additional factors such as demographic region. According to my son, all his classmates that applied EA got deferred, mostly engineering. He was the only one who got accepted within his group of classmates. They all have similar stats but he was one of the two that was offered and accepted alumni interview. I am pretty confident that the outcome of that interview had no bearing on the decision as it didn’t take place until last Sunday. I am not sure if getting invited for interview made a difference. They said it doesn’t. Who knows.
@college8402. If you don’t follow the instruction for the next step you will be rejected. How bad do you want to go to Michigan? There are literally thousands of students that would love that spot
