@sbdad12. Sorry about the deferment?. . This is normal. Lots of people with same, better, worse scores will be getting in. They do a holistic review for a reason. They are building a class. With around (guesstimate) 40,000 EA applications they can’t possibly take everyone. Who knows why one person gets in vs someone else. The essay is very important. If you look at the deferred applicants they could easily make another freshman class with comparable stats and scores. Hang in there. ?.
My theory is that if you have high stats, you need to go out of your way to convince Michigan that it is your top choice, otherwise there is a large probability they will defer you to see if you are still interested in Michigan after the ED season. If Michigan is your top choice, make that crystal clear by your actions and words (read: essay) and follow up with the AO. If it is not your top choice, just understand they will likely defer you if they sense that.
Any thoughts on how quickly our deferred D needs to write her additional essay? Will Michigan care if she sends it in this Monday or a few days later? (The official due date is 2/1 I think).
@Auntlydia. Speed is not important. This is a new process for Michigan. I would take a few days off to clear the mind then write a great Loci essay. If your daughter is good to go now then so be it. Michigan takes their essays seriously. They shouldn’t seem rushed. It also not a race. Just because you send it in tonight, it’s not first come first served. It might not get reviewed till March. They gave the Feb 1st deadline for a reason. They are not trying to trick anyone. Take a deep breath and have a good weekend.
I’m sure michigan takes their essay seriously, but are they really reading 60k of these lol? I honestly dont think they read essays unless you have certain stats - obviously could be wrong - they want to see if you can write effectively and convey your interest in the school - they want the loci to whittle down the pool a little while buying time for ED students from other schools to withdraw their UM application.
Why are some people worried that they haven’t received an acceptance email? If you are accepted, it is very easy to print a pdf of your acceptance letter. What are you looking for in an email?
Just curious.
OK I’m starting to go thru all the stats posted. And I come across a deferred LSA student with a 3.98 uwGPA and a SAT score of 1,380. Nothing too out of the ordinary right?
The other piece of info posted by the student? Family donated $20 Million and has their name on a building at UMich!
Seems like a legit post, but I’m always skeptical. If true, WOW!
“I called admission and they said the X doesn’t mean anything. They said their system is still uploading data, and you shouldn’t infer anything until you are given an official decision.”
The poster who figured this out should have been admitted based on this work alone
2)Oh UMich Admission office have you learned nothing. Don’t lie. “There’s no need to speculate admissions decisions will be out soon” would have been a good non-answer.
Don’t mean to be rude but since you’re out of state I’m guessing you’re not getting any aid…so how does someone in low income afford 150k a year in school expenses (you and your sister)…it just doesn’t sound right haha specially with the stats I mean you’re on the lower end, highly doubt you’re getting financial aid
How hard is it for out of state students to get financial aid? Because I don’t think I can afford attending here without a little aid because it’s so expensive.
Barefooter, Congrats! Shocked that your son was rejected by Illinois with those stats. My son was deferred by Michigan for engineering but accepted to Illinois for general studies (undeclared) and accepted to Rutgers for engineering, business and arts and sciences. NJ resident. He is thinking of changing his Michigan application to LSA because he is not sure if he wants to study engineering. ACT 34, UW GPA 4.0, W 4.7. 5 APs including BC Calc and Physics C.
Actually, she received a full ride, which is why she is able to go to umich. In addition, umich is known to be generous when giving need-based financial aid as it is not solely based off of merit
Yes, Illinois was a true disappointment. Several of son’s friends with lower stats got in.
So, I’m not sure what went wrong with son’s application. He poured a lot into Illinois essays and we were pretty confident he would at least be deferred. We were told that there was a bit of randomness in college applications, and it is coming true for us.
We’re happy to have UMich though. He will be happy attending CSE there for sure. Only downside is a higher sticker price compared to in-state Illinois.
