Class of 2024 undergrad/Class of 2022 grad: The Tours, the Auditions, the Journey

Anyone else still waiting on financials from Jacobs?? Checked my email and the portal, nothing.

@bridgenail So the ACTUAL wording is “the week of April 1”. That makes me think our last hope is Friday at midnight…
" All graduate financial aid decisions are made in mid-March after all admitted applicants have been processed and notified, and those receiving merit aid will receive notification by the week of April 1. This allows us to see the entire applicant pool and consider all applicants equally, regardless of when they auditioned or interviewed in the process"

I just e-mailed IU Jacobs and they replied very quickly that they “are continuing the scholarship award process and hope to notify all students, via email, by the end of the week.”

Mystery solved…but what a horrible answer…more waiting.

Ugh…I usually have some empathy for y’all BUT this year I feel like I’m waiting for my D’s results!! I’m actually stressed about this! But I know it can’t be zero for all of you…that makes no sense. Jacobs can be cruel (unpredicatable imo…with amounts) but zero just isn’t right (unless you have a 2.5 GPA). So put your seat belts back on…this is going to be a bumpy landing…

@IronCitEE so Let’s hope we get an email by Friday. Hopefully not Sunday.??

Sad to say, this is not a good look. We’re moving on with giving serious consideration to other top choices. Sorry. My frustration is showing.

@mom2clarinetobsessedkid Agree. They have so many students to process and there must be a lot of protocol to follow so things are equitable which slows things down. Very frustrating.

JSOM - We heard the number unofficially - shockingly low - since we are not professional negotiators - we are looking at other options - it would have been much better if they had rejected outright - we like the teacher but this overall experience seems like a sign even for the blind

Sending virtual hugs ? ( Air Hugs, of course) to @mom2clarinetobsessedkid , @IronCitEE , @songbirdmama, @bridgenail … and all other IU Jacobs Financial Aid Watchers and Wait-ers. Well for ALL who are waiting for ANY decision to be able to make a final decision !! I feel your frustrations. Just even ? about being in your position makes my heart pound . Sending plenty of ?hugs and wine ? ( if you partake … if not, I’ll take one for the team ! ? . It’ll be over soon !! It has to, right ? Thinking of you all .!

Still no financials from JSOM. It is baffling that this is dragging out so long!

I received my Jacobs offer at 7:30pm this evening. They’re trickling out, painstakingly!

we received Jacobs last night at 9PM cst
how to appeal - call directly or email?

@Trom2020 Face to Face is always best. In the absence of being able to do that, a phone call would be next. BUT, not sure about Jacobs, but ALL the universities offices I’ve called in the last two weeks were going to voicemail. Nobody’s there !! So, you’re likely going to have to email. OR, see if there are any accepted students day where you can make an appointment with financial aid for a one on one webinar /zoom interview. We were able to do that twice, both at accepted students day. Have to say, Emails were not working at all for my kid. Of course, everywhere is different. Also check to see if they have a FORMAL appeal process where you fill out a form or something. They’ll tell you what to do if you find out if there is a formal appeal process. Good Luck.

Thank you @BenniesMom1

Just emailed musicadm@iu.edu
Googled and could not find anything that suggested an appeals process.
Thankfully, we have two backup options but I cant wait too long to act on them

Can any experienced people let me know how long this appeals process can drag on - 1 day, 1 week …

This should not be this hard
My grand children wont be going to college if it is this hard to get into a college

@Trom2020 We heard in a few days. This was last year, so not sure it will be the same, but they know people are waiting. So sorry for all the Jacobs frustration, holy moly that’s tough :frowning:

@Trom2020 Did you email to ask about the appeal process or you actually emailed them the appeal letter? I have been told appeal letters are best if they come from the student and if the school is definitely in the top 1 or 2 on your list. If anyone wants a sample appeal letter, I can share ours from last year. Just PM me. Loyola University New Orleans was my daughter’s top choice and gave the most scholarship money, but her second choice would have cost less, so our goal was to get Loyola to come down closer to the second choice school. At that time, Loyola had an appeals committee which met once a week. She submitted her letter to the committee in April and heard great news within a week. We were successful in bringing down the cost significantly and could wholeheartedly get behind her attending Loyola. She loves it there so I’m really glad it all worked out and we decided to try an appeal. Good luck to everyone getting the final financial offers and entering the appeals part of this process. You are almost at the end of this marathon!

Hope all the financial aid appeals get great news!

At this point I’ve all but committed to UNT–my dad is a “hurry up and wait” kind of person and doesn’t want to send in a deposit yet. But I’m already talking to potential roommates, etc. It’s pretty exciting!

Excellent choice @Racingfan53 !! The level of play at UNT is off the hook and I know you will thrive there!

P.S. True story: Snarky Puppy was founded by UNT students who, in their own words, “weren’t good enough to get into the school ensembles.”

@Trom2020 My D was at IU. So I have “opinions” but no facts. So read this as experiences and opinions.

For an appeal on MERIT, I would guess you would not hear back in a few days…more like a few weeks. IU is a big ship with many moving parts. I’m not trying to make excuses for them…just give you a sense of the reality…which is different from small schools (or even other big schools!). IU DOES present frustrations…obviously. The idea that you will send in a request and a few days later…viola…you’ll get more money…is probably not going to happen (it might but I wouldn’t bet on it). If it took them a long time to make offers (and it always does at IU) I would guess it will take awhile for them to up any offers.

I would CALL admin if possible and ask them best way to up any MERIT offers. If you have a teacher, you should let them know in general that you are seeking an increase. Note teachers can only do so much (bc in the end it will come to NEED for the school). If you are negative or impatient in your email…they may not assist you much. Still you could say that you are still interested, that you need more merit and have contacted administation about it…and if there is anything the teacher could do, you would be grateful. Some teachers may respond to hold on…they will check into it. Others may not say much. A response could be an indication of interest by the teacher/dept and their willingness to fight for you or it could be an indication that the teacher knows they are heavy on your instrument and its a long shot. The problem is NO ONE knows for sure in a large school how it will play out…and adminstation will be watching the numbers to increase offers as time goes on…where appropriate for the school’s needs (despite your talent).

So…do YOU want to wait? This is where you can see the differences in offers from schools. If someone is all “hot and heavy” for you and making your life easy…maybe you don’t want wait for the “bad boy” of music.

Edit: I’m not saying IU is a “bad boy”…lol. It just may feel that way to some. Many schools do negotiate. IU does…but your success depends on their needs. Many people DO wait until the end of April for appeals…so it’s not particular to IU btw. But if YOU don’t like it…it’s OK to go elsewhere. That’s understandable.

And, if this in a FINANCIAL AID issue, then an appeal solely with the administration is the way forward.

@songbirdmama - any word from Jacobs yet? My daughter is also MM VP opera soprano and she hasn’t heard back.
