For discussion by those on the Virginia Tech Waitlist for Fall 2028
Don’t most schools require that accepted students accept by May 1? So wouldn’t VT start moving people off the WL after May 1? If you get into VT after May 1 and you have given another school a deposit, do you just lose the deposit if you accept the VT offer?
This is correct. It is critical though to commit to a school that you get fully accepted to. Sometimes people count on getting in on waitlist when it is somewhat uncommon.
Thank you. That’s very helpful.
So is it correct that most of the action on the WL should happen in May because VT won’t know how many people are on the WL and how many spots are available until May 1?
Yes your going to see most action after May 1 You may see a little bit action prior as each department evaluates their yields
Did Virginia tech do more waitlisting this year than deferrals? Seems like a lot posted waitlist on the thread
I don’t believe they do any deferrals - all waitlist or rejection.
Last year they did deferrals and then waitlist after regular decision but the dates were more spread out with 3 rounds. Also, last year they did not accept anyone off the waitlist.
Hi everyone! My child didn’t apply to VT but I’m here to offer hope with my next door neighbor’s story. His son applied to VT and I believe he got deferred then got wait listed. He was crushed. Waited everyday and check his portal constantly. Finally had to commit and pay the deposit for Arizona on May 1. Forced himself to fall for Arizona, with the gear banner, sweatshirts, etc. Got the call from VT in June I think, needless he is now in his junior year and loving Virginia Tech. So don’t lose hope!
Awesome story. Do you know his major?
Thank you.
Architecture
He did an internship last summer in nyc.
Looking for some clarity. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. VT is my DS’s #1 pick. He’s considering Penn State and Ohio State for Biomedical Engineering and Purdue for Biomedical Health Sciences. He also got into some other schools into their COE. Do you have kids in any of these schools? We want to make a deposit by May 1st just like the email suggests while we patiently wait to hear back from VT.
I only know of Purdue biomedical. A relative attended there and it’s definitely a great program with lots of opportunities for coops and internships.
Thank you so much!
No kids in those schools but my son was admitted to Penn State and Purdue for Aerospace Engineering, along with UIUC, Maryland, Colorado Boulder, and RPI. Hopefully we lose a deposit but this still stings…
Virginia Tech to extend admissions deposit deadline for first-year students to May 15
Does Virginia Tech allow winter start? Is that an option for kids on the waitlist?
