Class of 2028 - Virginia Tech - Waitlist Discussion

Do we know why they would extend the deadline?

FAFSA delays

OK, thanks. I’m trying to understand how that may or may not affect those on the WL. Are other schools instituting similar extensions?

Delay the WL decision was my thought. Our son enjoyed his visit to Penn State, so we now have a back up! Purdue, Illinois, Maryland, and RPI to go!

We just received our waitlist status from an RD application.

Welcome…and I’m sorry. Now it’s a waiting game.

Welcome

Well I guess this makes me feel better about our waitlist decision, if your son was accepted to all those places and waitlisted at VT. Things have changed dramatically at VT since I went to college, apparently.

Does anyone know how many RD were accepted? It feels like it’s going to be extremely tough to get off the waitlist.

Fyi, in the last year of reported data (2022) they offered waitlist to ~15000, around 7500 accepted a place on the waitlist, and of those 2500 were admitted. So actually not too bad, esp compared to other schools I’ve seen.

There is data from 2023. It was 0.

2020: 3961
2021: 3286
2022: 2458
2023: 0

So this apparent trend doesn’t look too good.

That’s interesting. Give that swing, unless their yield dramatically changed, they must have done something differently (eg admitted more outright). But agree, if they handled the same this year, that is not a hopeful picture for those on the WL!

Given they had no ED this year for first time their models may be way off

The big difference this year is that they did away with Early Decision. I’m not sure if that will help or hurt those on the WL. Since it is the first year without ED, maybe they put more students on the WL until they figure out the yield???

Last year they over accepted so I think they tried to course correct this year and hopefully over did it and there’s significant movement from the waitlist

Something I’ve been wondering about. VT emphasizes that they have an ā€œunrankedā€ waitlist. It is hard to parse what this means. Ultimately, they will have to select some students over others if they bring anyone off the waitlist. Does this mean it is random? Does it mean they just make those decisions based on merit later? Do they just say this to shut people up asking about where they are on the waitlist?

It’s sad kids with a 4.0 in state get waitlisted from uva And virginia tech. It’s supposed to be their mission to focus on in state kids

I thought maybe it was by major since they don’t let you change your major when on the waitlist, but even then they need some system to choose

I have a Junior at VT, and I thought it was tough back then coming off of Covid. But this year is just insane. My daughter was devasted, she currently has Indiana University and Delaware as 2nd and 3rd choice. A lot of deferrals from the southern schools, but she only cares about VT. I hope all of our kids get off this waitlist!!

Indiana and Delaware are great schools. I went to UDel and really enjoyed it. We visited Indiana and the campus is beautiful and business school is top notch. The southern schools are very popular right now so it’s been a waitlist parade at them
