Class of 2028 - Virginia Tech - Waitlist Discussion

I think the major means something. Her best friend was accepted, and I believe it was because she is going to major in Poultry Sciences, they have similar stats. My daughter is majoring in Psychology, which seems to be more popular.

We just got back from Indiana, it is beautiful, but her heart is at VT… so tough!
And we are going to visit Delaware soon.

What are the other options for your son/daughter?

Our admits are university of Oregon, Arizona state, Indiana, James Madison, Ohio state, university of Colorado, university of Alabama, and Penn state (2+2 program). We went to Ohio state last week and were super impressed so plan to accept there and switch to Virginia tech if we get off the waitlist.

U Del has a beautiful campus

Sounds like a perfect plan!!! I’ve heard all great things about Ohio State. She has JMU and Penn State, as well. - But it’ll be between UDel and UI. And like you, will switch to VT if we get off the waitlist. Good luck!

I’m optimistic that the numbers coming off the WL will be in the thousands, as in the years before 2023. I have no inside info, but that’s what my gut is telling me as a keen observer of this process at VT since the summer.

Same here. Just came back from OSU Buckeye Bound. Their engineeering department is impressive. But we will lose a deposit if we get into Vtech since it is instate for us. Praying and keeping our fingers crossed at this point.

Everyone I spoke to has their kids either accepted or waitlisted. Did Vtech have any rejections this year?

Yes we’re in same boat! Trying to connect our son with other kids going to Ohio State in the area too for potential roommates. If interested in connecting them let me know. We’re in northern Virginia. There’s also a DC area Ohio state event in Bethesda we plan to attend as well in March, assuming it doesn’t conflict with high school baseball season

I personally haven’t heard of any rejections.

We are in northern VA too. We have a few more college visits before we can finalize. VT is DS’s top choice so he is kind of bummed. We are visitiing Purdue and Penn State in April. So we should definitely let our kids connect with each other.

I surprisingly didn’t get rejected from VT, How do I improve my chances of getting an acceptance? when will I normally get a decision? and what are the chances of getting accepted in general? Is it basically a soft rejection at this point? I’d be pissed off at the fact that I met the criteria but got rejected because of spacing issue

Too many people got waitlisted this year from both EA and RD rounds. So the odds are not looking good at this point. What spacing issue are you talking about? VT compares the kids among their peers meaning the school/ demographic you come from. So, there is nothing we can do except patiently wait. In the meantime, mentally prepare yourself to commit to another school in case this doesn’t come through.

Last year I heard there was 0 acceptances off the waitlist since they were over admitting to the point where students had to book hotels as dorm rooms. I hope being a CT resident (small state yeah) and a female improves my chances of making it off the waitlist

Do you know the total number of how many people got waitlisted and how many were accepted? Thanks.

My son along with several others both female and male from his HS (top public magnet school) in VA have been waitlisted. It was ranked #1 in the nation until last year and now has moved to #6 nationally. These are all kids who have above 4.0 GPA, 1500 + SAT, impressive stats in regards to EC’s and volunteering. Unfortunately that is how college admissions work. And we are in state. There is nothing wrong with being hopeful, but be fully prepared to commit to another school. This is the advice I gave my son, who is disappointed just as you are.

Unfortunately, I don’t know the specific numbers. But do know that plenty of kids were waitlisted this year.

Makes sense that they would WL lots of people because they are probably concerned that they don’t know what their yield will be with no ED and with the December admissions. If they put lots of people on the WL, they aren’t at risk of under-enrolling.
