Class of 2028 - Virginia Tech - Waitlist Discussion

Usually it comes down to IPs and the degree of importance placed on those. Think of buckets - M/F, different majors, maybe IS/OOS, US/foreign, FA/FP, etc. And then an even deeper dive potentially for various arts, athletics, and other EC participation.

Invented example: if they’re shy a FP female tuba player from in-state majoring in poultry sciences, they’re not taking an OOS FA male hockey player majoring in CS from the WL.

I have no idea of what sorts of buckets VT may use. But this is typically the kind of discussion that surrounds unranked WLs.

What are IPs?

Institutional Priorities. 100% a thing, never published, often telegraphed (if subtly) especially if the AO publishes a blog or podcast.

Thanks. Makes sense. Gives them freedom to do whatever they want with the WL.

We’re willing to learn tuba

Make sure to include that in your LOCI.

I hope you like poultry too.

The WL email specifically says no Letters of continued interest

So frustrating

Agreed

It’s a joke.

That is not accurate. The hotel room thing was in 2018 or 19.
Admissions is always a bit of a guessing game on how many students who receive offers will accept. That % yield changes year to year, but Admissions uses the waitlist to make the difference. Last year, more students accepted and enrolled than usual so the target class size was met without needing to pull from waitlist. This year, there is more uncertainty because ED was an easy way to manage yield (yield there should be 100%). It seems likely they’ll pull fro waitlist to make the class size, but it will depend on major, etc.

Now I’m kind of wondering if I have a better shot at getting off the waitlist since I’m an OOS female in aero engineering , can anybody verify this?

It is my understanding that they try and back fill based upon similar criteria. I think you would have a good chance if they were incorrect on their yield for female OOS for aero engineering.

2k women vs 7k men in engineering for fall of 2023, I’d say that’s pretty underrepresented

4k out of state vs 5k in state, seems normal to me

Good analysis on the impact bc of no ED/known yield, and I specifically remember friend (fall 2019 entry, Grad class 2023) in hotel to start due to overcrowd. My Son is in the Fall 2024 Waitlist group as well. JMU seeming the new #1, but we’ll see. Still have a few more RD coming in late March. Good luck to all.

Hi. I’m new here but have been lurking for awhile. My daughter got waitlisted at VT. Applied in-state EA for industrial design, which is a tiny program compared to others but large compared to what’s available elsewhere. She got into the other 6 schools where she applied, but VT doesn’t accept portfolios and the rest did. She’s now deciding between U Cincinnati and RIT. Sounds like no one has gotten off the waitlist yet for any major so we’ll keep making alternative plans…

Good luck to her. I know two kids doing Industrial Design at RIT and they seem very happy with their experience there.

If this does happen at all, it won’t be until mid April at the absolute earliest. Probably more like late June to mid July is the most likely release of this information.

Has anyone heard of ANY applicant being rejected this year? I have not. I’m worried they offered the WL to 45K applicants.
