Ahhh looks like UMich admissions are now closed for Winter Break :frowning:

Ugh! So sorry!

I have no insight about the Clarinet studio…but I feel sure you might still hear something today! Fingers crossed you do!

Is anybody else still waiting to hear back from Bienen? My son hasn’t heard back but I know others who have for same instrument. Worried that he should have heard by now.

My son is a wind player and applied on the Dec 1 deadline and got a response on Tuesday. Fingers crossed for your S

We are visiting Michigan on Jan 25, then EA
Decision comes out on the 29th. I wonder how that’s going to work. Are they even incorporating auditions into that component. Or might they let her in one program but not the other?
Will probably defer I bet

Is D applying to two programs?

I’m pretty sure, and it was a little bit of weird paperwork at
The outset on November 1st when she was getting everything in. She had to keep emailing to add the other program

For many schools, the EA would apply to the one program that is not audition-based. In order to be admitted to the SMTD, she’ll need to pass her audition. Some schools do defer and wait for the audition results, some don’t, and some don’t even allow you to apply EA if you’re planning on auditioning for the music program at all. Someone here may have more experience with how UMich operates under the dual program/EA scenario.

Just for references. I had two students (class of 22 and 23, both string players) who applied to UMich dual degree, SMTD + engineering or CS. Neither applied EA. Both accepted to SMTD and both waitlisted at the other school, later accepted. Both received merit scholarship after audition. One is currently attending, the other one committed to another university. I remember both received SMTD acceptance in early February, way before hearing from the other school. Our impression was that UMich admissions for different schools might work on their own without knowing what the other school was doing. It’s only two cases though.

I’m not sure if I’m following the ED/EA comments fully but I find the increase in EA/ED applications interesting. 10 years ago I barely remember it. It has never been a big deal in music partly bc the schools do need to see/hear the talent. And studio availability is a moving target even in the Spring. So, I think that the acceptances would be very small as it would have to be a talent that was really solid and definitely needed. Otherwise why not wait? Most competitive schools do not have trouble filling out their studios…but who knows going forward…

A quick google check brings you to the University of Michigan STMD page that says clearly (near the bottom) that STMD does not participate in EA.

Schools do acceptance in a variety of ways (all of which are usually outlined in their music school websites…NOT the general university website). For Michigan it should be this page or links within it. You can also call the school and ask how acceptances are done.

If she did apply EA, it most likely was for a different program. Maybe it appears as a double degree. So she could be accepted for one degree EA, maybe a BA. Then she would need to audition for the BM as there is no EA in that case. Of course, I’m not an expert and could be wrong…but you can always call the school and check.

I guess I wanted to comment, in general on the thread, to just say:

You can always go online to the MUSIC school site or call music admissions to get information on how their acceptances work. In many cases, it is a two step process…academic and artistic. In some case, you need both to get into the school. In others you could be accepted by the school but not the BM program. And in others, you could be held for acceptance at the school due to academic results slightly below par but then accepted after an excellent audition. All schools have their own process.

The next few months can be even more stressful as you make travel plans. So, in order to make the best of limited time and money, music admissions can be your “friend” when you have to be in two places at one time or have to buy a ticket and haven’t hear back yet or any other issues…

Good luck.

Edit: just saw the other comment above which shows some real results from Michigan.

Yes, I know the EA/ED less common, but I feel like I am seeing a little. And D24 actually has seen some surprising (surprisingly positive) results that make her feel like maybe there is an advantage.

Got my UCLA result today. Has anyone heard from UCSB?

Has anyone heard when NEC releases results? I can’t find anything on the web!

Still time this evening for possible results! Hoping that people still in that holding pattern get an answer. Either way, happy holidays! Enjoy a break and get some much needed physical… and mental… rest.
