Class of 28 Undergrad/Class of 26 Grad: a thread to capture the journey of applications, pre screens, tours and auditions

Nearby Los Angeles Children’s Chorus (Pasadena based) is another potential resource for accompanists that you could hire. They have several.

Requiring a vocalist to find, coordinate and compensate an accompanist is (unfortunately) not unheard of in VP Classical. For UG and grad auditions at the school, I don’t remember my D having to do this. However this audition is not on campus…so it sounds like the school is falling back on the practice of having the vocalist take care of the accompanist. My D auditions professionally for opera and MT. MT auditions have always provided the accompanist for auditions. For opera companies…sometimes….

I have no experience or insight, but is it possible to ask them for a few references/contacts? You may be on the hook for it… but at least you will have someone they like

I’m still waiting to hear from Eastman, Carnegie Mellon, and University of Maryland. I know that CMU tends to release stuff pretty late, but should I reach out to the other two if I dont hear back today?

You might reach out to them to explain and ask for guidance. My daughter (MM Soprano) is doing the in person audition at Peabody and I recall reading somewhere that you could do the in person with OR WITHOUT their provided accompanist. I’m not suggesting that might be a good strategy for yours, but also if you can’t find one it may not be a big deal.

Anyone know how CMU notifies students about prescreen? Is it through email…the main portal…Acceptd?

I have twin high schoolers - one plays horn the other cello… of course the one that wants to pursue performance in college is the cellist that practices a ton (in a competitive sea of other highly dedicated cellists) vs the horn who barely puts in effort and still manages to succeed at the high school / youth orchestra level due to lack of competition (much to sibling’s annoyance). You mentioned your violinist passed Frost and 2 others, congrats.

Everyone seems to need horns right now. I can tell my students to apply here and they will generally get in - violin no🤣 I get contacted all the time for festivals and colleges for students. My daughter’s first 2 prescreens were no’s but the next 3 were yes’s. Waiting on 2 more and has others no prescreen. It will work out - my daughter wants a supportive atmosphere - we looked a bit differently but it will all work out fingers crossed. Good luck to your cellist - tons of great schools outside the top conservatory schools. We are also looking at cost also!

Yep, my spouse is on faculty at BU and NEC so our kids have seen what level gets through prescreen on his instrument (which neither of our kids play) but we know the number of qualified string applicants is huge; I started reading this thread because I know our cello kid is going to be on this side of it in just over a year and I was curious what string applicant families face (a bit foreign to us).

They probably have a list, ask about it, it could also be cheaper if that collaborative pianist is already planning to work with other applicants/candidates.

We are in MA too. She wants to get out of here - her schools are over the place. Lots of passion project kids playing the instrument to get to Harvard here in MA🤣 - she is ready for a change. Did not apply to BU or NEC.

If memory serves, the notification that there is a message on Acceptd will come to their email. But you can always just check Acceptd in case the email didn’t make it for whatever reason.

Mine is definitely not doing the passion project Harvard route! Best to your daughter, I’ll be interested where she goes outside of our MA music bubble! (My kid right now is studying German and French trying to open a door to a shot at European conservatories - also aiming to leave MA.)

Applied to 2 in England - 1 of the no’s for prescreen RCM, Mcgill in Canada. My husband from Ireland - we travel a lot and wants an adventure. Oberlin, Peabody, Mannes taking auditions - waiting on Royal Academy and Bard for prescreens. A no from CCM which was a bit of a surprise but apparently over 80 percent of students are from Ohio. And she is taking one at Boston Conservatory passed that prescreen on moms request - in case she does not in the end want to leave. Also Hartt and Ithaca (has a wonderful cello teacher - I worked with him at a music festival in Italy)
