Class of 28 Undergrad/Class of 26 Grad: a thread to capture the journey of applications, pre screens, tours and auditions

My daughter (soprano, classical voice) got prescreen pass from Juilliard last night!

Congrats!! I understand that some cellist got their pre screen pass before the break. So I guess they release their prescreen in different times…

We heard of a male vocalist getting his yesterday, on another group.

Hi,
My D was invited to audition at Colburn, they said there is a theory test they need to take before, any idea what they are looking for?

Just passed Eastman and Carnegie Mellon! A great start to the weekend.

In general theory tests are for placement only (in the school’s theory classes). You can always check with the school.

It is not uncommon during the audition day to have a written theory test and/or a short meeting with older students/faculty members to check musical skills (theory, sight reading etc). It was always presented as for placement in classes and not part of the audition. And, of course, some schools don’t do this at all.

Thank you!! But what if a student performs poorly on the exam? My D never took a theory class…

They may be put in a remedial theory class (non college credit). That is what happened at my D’s school. They were still accepted but had to take remedial theory before moving on to college level theory. The schools (IU) stated clearly it was only for placement.

If concerned, you can reach out to music admissions at Coburn. They may help you understand if it would have any impact on acceptance.

Virtually all the schools that give theory tests say they are for placement only and do not affect admission. Some give them during the audition process; others in the summer or fall after admission.

Having said that, I would highly suggest enrolling in a theory class before going to college, either during the spring or summer. It will really help! You can take them online these days, either through precollege programs or through college programs. Juilliard offers them, and I feel like Interlochen and Oberlin have as well.

I’m assuming Jazz drums? Can you post a little bit about your son’s journey with some info about other schools he applied to? My S25 is a Jazz drummer playing in some NYC area programs and combos and started looking at schools this fall.

Thanks, Jason

Re NyU: We haven’t received confirmation email regarding receipt of prescreen video.
She sent it in over break. Has anyone else heard back?

What program? We heard back over break from Steinhardt for voice, submitted Nov 29.

Jazz. But even just looking for confirmation email. I will just email them I suppose. Thank you

Congrats!!
When is your Frost audition?
My son auditioned EA on 12/2 for media scoring and production- trying to figure out when we might hear something!

If this helps…we heard EA results the very last Friday in January last year. This was for Jazz but I think most went out that day
