Passed UC Santa Barbara for vocal performance!
Has anyone heard from Juilliard prescreen for violin?
My son heard for viola, it was an update on the Application portal so maybe check there?
Not yet, unless the ‘no’ hear later:-)
I think actually that each studio releases all pre-screens at the same time, so probably violin is just taking a bit longer. It is really hard to wait… my son is also still waiting on two more!
Last year (2023 auditions) my son heard from Juilliard 1/11 for violin, so around now. They definitely release instrument by instrument, and violin is always one of the latest.
So true. Too many violinists My D was one of them. Would you be able to share rehearsals and audition experiences with a Juilliard piano accompanist?
Does anyone know who sits in on the in-person auditions? For example, there are four viola professors at IU; can I reasonably expect that all four professors will be present for the live audition?
Very likely yes.
My D had her auditions at IU, there were 7 professors on stage…
Sometimes they also video it for people who are not there, so even if all are not present, they will most likely review the audition later on.
Happy to share about Juilliard piano rehearsal experience.
This was probably the most challenging one to arrange and coordinate. They give you a list of pianists and you need to email people on the list ASAP to try to snag a spot with someone good. You are responsible for payment. Luckily my son has friends there so they were able to make recommendations for who to ask and who not to ask. Obviously, try to pick one who has a lot of violin experience. Don’t be surprised if one or two say no – they may already be full or they may not know your rep.
You typically only will be able to arrange one rehearsal, and often not more than 30 minutes if the accompanist is busy. The accompanist gave my son intel about what they would ask (ie don’t rehearse past the exposition of your concerto because they won’t hear it), so they just rehearsed that.
Also, if your modern piece is with piano, that can be problematic if the pianist doesn’t know it. If it is a common one you should be OK. Sometimes the pianists will just say they won’t do it if it is hard and would require a lot of work.
The biggest issue my son had at Juilliard was practice space the day before and day of. Impossible to get!
PM if you need more info.
This is great info. Thank you so much!! Did Juilliard have a call back on the day of the audition?
Want to share this for people looking at prescreen results dates next year. . .
Rice 12/19/23
UIUC 12/19/23
NEC 12/22/23
Univ of Maryland 1/12/24
Eastman 1/5/24
Carnegie Mellon 1/6/24
I applied for MM in Flute and passed UIUC, UMD, Eastman, CMU. Did not pass Rice or NEC.
Congratulations and good luck to everybody!!
No callback at Juilliard for violin. The only school where my son had a true callback was Curtis, though they call it something more like final round. At Colburn some students were asked to meet with faculty for a discussion (and I think a lesson in some cases – my son had already had one so they just talked).
For Curtis was the callback on the same day or a different day?
My son is a cellist. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!
This depends on the studio. If the website has one date for auditions for your instrument, first round would be in the morning, then a final round later the same day.
Voice is always multiple days, also violin, piano as they are much larger studios with more applicants.
This is how auditions have run in recent years, but be sure and contact admissions if you have any questions. They are very helpful.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I sent it to my son and he was like “oops I guess I better get on that!” (ugh)… but then he said he looked and there is no list for accompanists. Did they send it out later?
Was the callback the same day?
