Class of 28 Undergrad/Class of 26 Grad: a thread to capture the journey of applications, pre screens, tours and auditions

Thank you @anotheroboemom again! We only have 1 audition day scheduled.

Curtis final rounds vary a ton by instrument, so definitely check with the studio or admissions team.

Funny story about the Curtis final round…it was two days after his initial round, which was in the morning. We scheduled him on the last flight out but they scheduled finals around 5-7PM and he ended up missing his flight. Luckily his airline ticket was flexible, but he had to spend another night there. Expensive lesson learned – your callback or final round audition might be at night!

This is so good to know!

Same here! I was here at this site 4 years ago with nervous anticipation. Now that my son is applying for grad school it’s still nerve wrecking, but not as bad. I was struggling to remember the site, but am glad I found it :-).

How was his grad school list affected by his undergrad audition experiences? Or was it just based upon what he’s done since?

The undergrad audition experience didn’t really affect his grad school list. He auditions more confidently now, but like most musicians I’m sure, still has to work at not comparing himself to other. For example, saying, ā€œWell if this colleague didn’t get it, I shouldn’t even apply.ā€ I’m just putting on a good face to keep him motivated and encouraged when deep down I’m just nervous as he is, lol.

I would like to respectfully dispel the notion that there is ā€˜way less competition’ for men in VP. To gain admission, as a male or female, you must be talented, hard working, and at the level your peers are. Perhaps your vocal development is happening later, as it does with men, but it is not ā€˜easier’ to get in to a high level conservatory or music school because you are male.

If you compete in the various competitions (Schmidt, for example, or later, Laffont), you are competing with females. And they aren’t going to award a prize to a token or two males. They are going to hand out prizes for the best performances.

Male singers do not have an edge just because there are fewer of them. I hope your son is enjoying his first year and I am sure he’s working very hard!

True. My kid might not be the most talented singer out there but I know they saw his potential.

I have a question about Juilliard, my son was hoping to fly out the night of his audition day as he’s juggling a few other things but I wondered about ā€œcall backsā€. He did not encounter this in his undergrad auditions, is it unique to violin maybe, or just Juilliard? Would he be safe to fly out that night?

They should let you know in advance if there is anything else you need to do while there. For violin, Juilliard was a scheduled audition time. He played his 10 minutes and that was it for the day. He did have to be there the night before to rehearse with the accompanist, though. I think this is true for most instruments at Juilliard, but you can definitely send a message to the admissions team to verify.

Thank you! He is going a day early for rehearsals and to scope everything out. Flying out that night saves another hotel bill too, not the cheapest places to stay around there!

Just to clarify, the above posts regarding ā€œcallbacksā€ were referring to Curtis auditions, not Juilliard.

It was a few years ago, but my son’s Juilliard audition was also at a specific and scheduled time. Also with the primary challenge of organizing and rehearsing with an accompanist.

Edited to add:
The year my son was auditioning, his Curtis audition was on a Saturday with Juilliard on Sunday. His Juilliard time slot was around 9:30am. Because he made Curtis finals (callback) he did not leave Philly until around 7, by train. Late arrival to NYC and then a scrambling early morning rehearsal with his accompanist at 7am.
He handled it so well, but what a challenging two days! I wish we had known ahead of time how tight that turnaround would be. Perhaps he would have asked to change to an afternoon time at Juilliard. But all hindsight now!
