Oh wow, that sounds stressful! It’s good to know about the callbacks at Curtis. I couldn’t find the original mention but Juilliard sounds more like what my son’s done before. Thank you!
Did you schedule rehearsal with the pianist beofre you got an audition time ? We know the day my D is invited to an audition but not the time… Also can you share the information about your pianist?
There was no list of accompanists in his audition email or on the application portal so he’s emailed and waiting to hear back. According to the website they provide an accompanist for the audition (but you pay for a rehearsal if you want one). I will share the info when he receives it!
I just looked up my son’s Juilliard stuff from last year and the accompanist list was sent later in a separate email on 2/15. For violin, they listed three accompanist choices for each audition date, so it was not too challenging to arrange. I think the one that was really tough to arrange must have been NEC – they gave us a big long list.
So I think DD will do Peabody in person and fly alone - any tips on a hotel suitable for an 18yo would be fab!
Anyone finding it hard to arrange summer plans/auditions in the middle of these visits and applications? Also big time for concert and festivals over here. I guess the hats the life of a musician, auditions and performances will not likely land in an ideal schedule
D has missed so much school already with visits and auditions and has missed the first two days of second semester being away at an audition this week! Miraculously, we haven’t run into any conflicts in terms of concerts/performances, but I feel like we won’t be able to breathe until May 1st.
So when my son did his auditions (sans parents) several years ago, he was still 17 which presented some challenges. I ended up booking him through my account on Airbnb and making sure the host approved an unaccompanied minor.
Your daughter is 18 which certainly makes it easier. Our priority was always proximity to the audition venue, ideally within a couple of blocks. Thus, less complicated ground transportation with only one Uber to the hotel and then one back to the airport.
Be sure and check with the hotel that they do not require guests to be 21 to sign in. Some do.
Good luck!
I did auditions with my son last year BUT we have encountered this a bunch this year with college travel (we are in CT, he is in TX)…Hiltons have a digital app so you never need to “check in.” Also, because I was nervous as the hotel (Embassy Suites) said 21+ and I’m a rule follower lol, I called and the front desk basically told me they overlook this in these kind of circumstances…Maybe call and explain ahead…or stick with hotels that offer digital check in/key
When we went to Peabody audition last year we stayed at a relative’s place. I just want to give your D a heads up that Peabody entrance might be difficult to find or get through from street. I dropped off my son on Washington Pl right by the building with “Peabody Institute” carved on it; however, the door was locked. He walked up along the fence towards the monument, found a gate, also locked. I left him there to figure out and drove around the block to the parking garage entrance. He said eventually someone inside saw him and let him in. From the parking garage it was not hard for me to navigate to the check-in desk though. There was an attendant at the garage entrance (on St. Paul close to Center). If she is arriving by herself, maybe ask ahead of time for the specifics. I made the mistake of assuming my son would know how to get in; and he made the mistake of assuming there would be a door wide open.
Me too! And I had this ongoing panic that he was not going to be able to check in and pictured him sleeping on a park bench in the snow with his head on his oboe case.

In retrospect, the whole audition process can be so nerve-wracking for us as parents. Not just the pressure on our kids, but the worry we have about how they will feel about the outcomes. Maybe that makes us pick things to panic about…the weather, travel, illness, other competitors. Apparently my trigger was the Airbnb check in.
Know that our kids have experience with performing and therefore are much more in control of the situation than we are as spectators in the process. So long as we keep our panic to ourselves…all is well. They are amazing and can handle so much!
Hotel Indigo is very close to Peabody and has a restaurant onsite for breakfast
The Indigo is on the Hotel list on the Peabody website which says special rates for Peabody/JHU. There are others. Just go on the Peabody website and type hotel into the search bar. The Indigo is just a couple of blocks away. Not sure about the others.
Many thanks everyone - really helpful!
Several places have instrument specific instructors reach out to carve out time for individual lesson.
Is this like ‘extra audition’ presumably, and if a school has not done this, should we try and set that up?
Yes, I would absolutely take advantage of that! It’s also a great opportunity to ask questions about the program.
My son had lessons with all of his potential teachers and that really helped him make the decision in the end. The school he had thought was his first choice changed because of the lesson.
I’m sorry for so many questions but since your son auditioned there I have one more about the structure of the audition. The required audition rep is a lot (for MM)- a full concerto, full sonata, full bach suite/partita, plus a concert piece, but the time slot is 10 minutes. Obviously you won’t play it all but any advice on what to expect? Thank you for all your help!
My son is auditioning for viola performance next weekend at University of Michigan. In addition to the audition, the schedule has a master class listed with one of the professors. Has anyone’s student had this experience. Assuming maybe it’s all the violists who audition that day together?
Congrats! We have a bass audition there on a Thursday. We weren’t given an opportunity for a master class, but when we went for a trial lesson in the fall the teacher had my D and another prospective student sit in on a studio class. I imagine the matter class is just like you said… for all the violists to get a better sense is the instructor. i’d double check of course!
