same!
What day will you be there? We are on Friday, 1/26!
Schools tend to do a variety of events or minimal events. It seems different even for studios and teachers. Some teachers reach out. Others donāt. So you just need to be open to any invitations. If you do get invited to meet a teacher or do a master class by all means DO IT! If you canāt due to travel times etc., I would be sure to follow up with any of the teachers that contacted you, and send regrets and see if something would be available remotely. Any opportunity with a teacher (privately or in a group setting) is a great opportunity.
And, just be aware that during this time period, you could get verbal or even emailed messages that indicate you will be accepted from a teacher. Thatās great! BUT absolutely wait for the written acceptance from the school. It is rare but it has happened to people on this site every few years, where a teacher will say something likeā¦see you next fallā¦or youāre perfect for my studioā¦and then they get a rejection. The teacher is NOT the only decider. So always, always wait for the official acceptanceā¦while being enthusiastic with the teacher and grateful for their positive comments.
One other point: music is always a small world. So even if you are unsure about a teacher or school, it can definitely be worth your time to do a lesson bc you might run into them again at a festival or for grad school. This has happened to my D. So itās always good to be professional when invitation are given and try to work it into your (overly busy) schedule.
Edit: @crabbydaddy Yes, you can try to get time with teachers during the audition weekend by contacting them. Be aware however that it can be very busy. So your D may want to acknowledge that in her request (she understands that they may be too busy but she is interested in them). If they donāt have time or donāt respondā¦itās still OK bc she has put them on notice of her interest.
Same circumstances! My college freshman thought he had a first choice then it all changed after after meeting potential professors! He is so happy he did that bc he loves where he is!
Thanks, no question we would make every effort to accept any invitation by anyone at a school she likes.
Iāll have her reach out to other school to indicate interest/meet individual teacher.
Thanks for advice
@delynnel , what day will your son be auditioning at Juilliard? If Iām following the thread correctly, sounds like theyāre both applying for the same program, MM in Violin Performance.
I strongly encourage trial lessons if possible. Ironically, the undergrad school my son chose 4 years ago, was the only place he didnāt have a trial lesson. He did with the others. This year, heās only had one trial lesson so far. Between wrapping up his senior year in college, performances, etc., Iām not sure if heāll be able to lessons with them all.
My son is viola, audition on March 6
This is still for Juilliard, right? For violin undergrad, my son played about 4 minutes of the first movement of his concerto, 3 minutes of his Bach fugue, and 3 minutes of modern piece. He also had Paganini on his list and that was not asked at all, nor did they ask for the rest of his concerto or the other Bach mvmt he prepared. I would expect the exposition of the concerto first movement for sure, and likely some of the hardest movement of whatever Bach has been prepared. Beyond that, it could be anything!
Yes, Juilliard. Thank you so much!
I described my sonās U Michigan audition last year in your other post.
Another option more teachers may be open to post covid is a sample lesson/meeting after acceptance via zoom. My kid did do one zoom session after acceptances last year on request. I wouldnāt request a lesson during audition week unless offered, but after acceptance, absolutely.
@delynnel My son is also auditioning on the 6th. Heās in NY this weekend for a trial lesson with his primary choice of teacher and loved the lesson with her. Best of luck to our sons. Who knows, maybe theyāll be colleagues together in the Fall .
Not till 2/1!
Thank you for reminding me of this, I went back to reread it and it is very helpful. Iām excited to miss work for day and spend time with my son out of town
First audition this week- UMich. Wish us luck, school so friendly and already multiple conversations making it less anxiety provoking but still a new thing for us.
Oh my gosh, I remember this panic I had when my kid ended up going to Texas alone. I was so glad I found a place that allowed me to check in remotely, because he arrived there exhausted at midnight after waiting in airports all day. I just called a few hotels in the area and asked during the reservation stage. One turned me down.
Has anyone besides Bass heard from Curtis? Itās so lateā¦!
I just came here to ask the same question!
We were just at Michigan last weekend! Great experience and everyone was so nice!
If you havenāt already I definitely recommend taking a general campus tour. And Ann Arbor is amazing!!! Have fun!!
