Class of 28 Undergrad/Class of 26 Grad: a thread to capture the journey of applications, pre screens, tours and auditions

Best of luck to him! Can’t say I have much experience with the brass program, but if you have questions about Jacobs in general, I have 2 older kids who attended.

Which brass instrument?

Many schools do give both academic and music merit money. My son had both academic and music scholarships at UNT and received both academic and music money at other schools as well. You may not receive both awards at the same time, policies do vary by school, and you should check the website and/or ask at Temple for their policy.

Thanks, did he attend UNT a friend just had incredible experience. We
Did not apply though.
Thanks for advice, we will check as we
Get closer.

D24 has a virtual this weekend. Heard great
Things, too far from us but she likes faculty and describes one of the kids as ‘ a generational talent’. Wish it wasn’t so far away from home

S will be there for composition (and piano). Then we are driving over to Cleveland for his interview at CIM. Fun weekend ahead!

Yes, mine has both at UNT. When he was auditioning others heard about UMiami academic money early (he didnt get any) then he heard with the rest about music merit after his audition.

He is trombone.

Thank you! I appreciate that, he loved IU when we visited last year. So hoping for a good audition day.

Nice! Best of luck! That will be a busy weekend–but in a good way:).

Cleveland (area) native here and parent to a Senior VP major @ CIM. I highly recommend having a meal in Little Italy while visiting CIM if you have some time. (Little Italy is Mayfield Road, just east of Euclid - I personally recommend Guarino’s for a sit-down meal, Mamma Santas for pizza/pasta, and/or Presti’s for counter-style and amazing desserts.) The conservatory itself is small but consider driving around the Case Western campus since the schools are so closely tied. Take a stroll near Wade Oval and venture into Severance Hall if you have some time. Hopefully the weather cooperates for your trip. Safe travels and have fun!

Oberlin parent here- and I second the Little Italy recommendation! Had a great meal at drop off this last fall at Michaelangelo’s- handmade pasta and lovely atmosphere. Cleveland is a lovely city!

Thank you @jilukes and @Baribassmom! :smiley:We love trying out local restaurants! Does Guarino’s need reservations for a Saturday night?

I got so caught up in the food recommendations that I didn’t see the remainder of your post! :joy: We actually visited CIM last April, and DS and I both loved the area. We did sneak a peek in Severance Hall - only the lobby areas, though. And we walked from the school and got some lunch in the nearby shopping/eating area that looked like it catered to CWR and CIM students. (Not sure what area that’s called.) It’s his top pick, unless he possibly, maybe gets into Curtis (which we have yet to hear from).

I recommend it yes.

Haven’t posted much lately, since most of what’s still out there for DS is LACs. But he had his UGA audition this past weekend and was in good spirits afterwards, and he’s done a few sample lessons at his non-music schools as well. FWIW, everyone he’s approached has been happy to do a lesson (mostly they’ve been virtual) except the teacher at Amherst, who told him she only does them for admitted students. Which is totally fine and makes sense; I’m a little surprised he didn’t get that response more often, honestly. I’ll be very curious to see how things go from here. He has mostly big reaches out there right now, which was on purpose since he knew he had St. Olaf as an option already and it will be near the top of his list no matter where else he gets in. So I’m doing a lot of managing expectations and reminding him of the super low acceptance rates. He focused on schools that meet need and are need blind and seem to have strong music programs. I’m wondering if he’s just going to end up picking one of the places he can do a performance degree after all this, though. Which is fine! But an awful lot of essays that maybe he didn’t need to write after all! I also wonder if he’s coming across as TOO focused on music to some of these schools. The horn guy at one LAC said he’d be happy to do a lesson but made sure to emphasize that they’re not a conservatory. Too good at music for LACs, not good enough for top music schools! That would be sad. But for real, he really likes St. Olaf and the FA is totally workable there, so I’m not too concerned (and UGA, too, if he gets into the music school. Otherwise he’s not particularly interested).

And let me add that the opportunities for student composers and student instrumentalists/vocalists to collaborate are countless at Jacobs. My older 2 kids–one VP, one jazz guitar–frequently premiered the works of student composers while they were there. And so many of them still keep in touch with each other post Jacobs–which makes for great networking!

My DD had her audition yesterday at Boston Conservatory for violin - even though we are from the area we do not know much about the school. Everyone one seemed great at the school - very warm and fuzzy vibe! Two trial lessons with 2 different teachers. Now 6 more in 5 weeks while juggling my own playing and teaching :heart: Cheers everyone

Thank you for sharing that! For whatever reason, DS is not at all excited about Jacobs. I have been the one pushing it. His main opposition to it is that he thinks it’s too big, but at the same time wouldn’t be enough opportunities. :woman_shrugging: It’s the only school we didn’t visit that he has passed prescreen, and I wonder if it would have made a difference in his attitude if we had. I have implored him to keep an open mind and be open to the opportunity because no school is guaranteed. I know that Jacobs has an outstanding reputation, and based on what I’ve read and heard, their composition program is great. So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that being there this weekend will change his mind.
