Class of 28 Undergrad/Class of 26 Grad: a thread to capture the journey of applications, pre screens, tours and auditions

That was absolutely not our experience at the LACs and BA music programs. They were thrilled that S24 applied and all were very excited to show their support for him. Maybe it is because he applied for music scholarships and did it very early. THe people at Emory, Davidson and WIlliams where he was attending were thrilled to have him and throw their support behind his application.

I have heard mixed reviews regarding Jacobs. Definitely keep an open mind. My daughters teachers son went their undergrad and grad - started in musical theater and transferred to opera. Very cutthroat atmosphere- was very happy in the opera program though. It is an absolutely beautiful campus and music facility. My daughter wants be in a collaborative friendly atmosphere. Some students thrive on competition. I think it just depends on what you want. I went to MSM undergrad absolute misery for me - great training but misery. Once you know where your son gets in go and meet with the professor and talk to many students. Keep an open mind until then!

DS did a lesson with the Williams teacher, and that went well. And Emory definitely seems to like musicians…there are always a few kids from his youth wind symphony who go there; DS had a lesson and that guy was very encouraging. But then there are a couple of places where he’s gotten a much more muted reaction…which is fine and might tell him something about how much those schools value music and musicians. There’s nothing wrong with some schools putting less of an emphasis on classical music, of course, but it’s good to know (like he really likes Grinnell, but I get the impression it might not be the best place to go if he wants to keep improving on horn…if for no other reason than because they’re not near a big city and perhaps can’t attract or retain the best applied faculty). I don’t know…this is my first go round with a kid who’s serious about music but doesn’t want to do ONLY music, so it’s all new and I’m trying to figure it out as I go.

Well that makes sense, there are certainly going to be schools that are less interested. I totally forgot that S also met with the vassar teacher and they seemed very enthusiastic. St. Olaf certainly sounds like a great choice.

I get it. It has to be a fit. And honestly my youngest is not sure it is for her. Every kid is different. I hope he has a great visit though and keeps an open mind. Options are good!

Classical?

Yes, classical. He hopes to do jazz at some point but auditioning under classical.

D24 is jazz, I feel like she knows every jazz trombone in the country, such a fun and warm community.

It is a great community! Remind me what instrument is your D? Mine is anxiously waiting to hear if he makes all-state jazz this week.

Jazz trombone, our all state audition is this weekend.

I feel like our Ds are auditioning at similar places. I believe they were at Jacobs the same weekend. I know you recently visited UMich… when is the audition? I believe we are there next week. I often look around and wonder if I’ve chatted with anyone on here, lol. Maybe I should start wearing a unique accessory as a ā€œsignā€ to friends on the board!

Good luck to your son! My daughter has a later audition on Friday for Vocal Performance. If you have any questions about the school or Bloomington in general, just let me know. Pretty familiar with it:).

We did not go to Jacobā€˜s, but now I I am wondering if there’s another female Trombone going to the same places. She would love to have another one next year.

Does Curtis require accompaniment for the bass audition and, if so, how is that done? Do you come early to rehearse with the accompanist like at Juilliard?

At Curtis, some of the studios will have accompanied auditions, others will not. It should be on the website under the audition repertoire section for each instrument. But double check with the admissions department if it is unclear.

Good luck!

Yes, the website doesn’t mention anything whereas all the other schools do, so I figured someone who actually passed prescreens would know since they’d be given specific info. My kid doesn’t apply til next year, but it would be nice to know what the procedure will be.

Just a heads up…it can vary from year to year. Especially for the smaller studios.

BTW Curtis, are prescreens out for violin?
