For bass Curtis doesnât mention needing accompaniment on the website (other instruments do though). So far weâve only received an email with our audition date and an invitation to a sample class the evening before, with a promise of more details to come.

Anyone have experience with the Oberlin music theory exam/how much it is used in admissions decisions vs. used for placement? S said he bombed several sections. Nothing he can do about it now as he didnât have the bandwidth to try to study/retake it, but just trying to manage expectations.
Itâs been awhile but it was used for placement only, and that was true at all the schools we dealt with. I imagine they need those results to figure out teaching staff needs and size of classes.

Thanks for your reply! That is what I thought I had remembered hearing, but the way it is described on the website made me panic a little. 
From what I have heard, shockingly no, at least as of yesterday. Curtis violin results are always late, but they are exceptionally late this year.

I can confirm that the test is used for placement only, AND, once/if admitted, he can retake the test in the summer (thereâs a deadline sometime in July, I believe) if he wants to. The only thing the test does is allow the student to skip the first semester basic Music Theory class if you score 80 or above. If not, they just have to take the basic class in addition to 4 more semesters of Theory.

Some schools the music award was worth more than the academic. Others seemed to have pots especially kids who were worthy in both catagories(e.g. Lawrence). It really varies from school to school. @crabbydaddy

Placement only and they have a bunch of chance to re-take it. Plus Oberlin puts up resources the students can use to study.
You can keep retaking - My daughter was happy with her 80 and moved on

Yeah, itâs nice they give the option to retake. However, my sonâs logic was âwhy retake it? I am just going to get the same score unless I study, which I donât have time for now.â

Sounds like you can retake it later in the Spring. Just donât quite understand why Oberlin makes you take it once now.

I believe it helps them to sort out what resources theyâre going to have to put into the basic theory class for the incoming first years, or at least get a glimpse of whatâs to come.
Registration is a nightmare if placement tests are done once on campus. The schools like to figure out how many kids in how many classes with how many professors etc. There will be slight changes in placement but not massive chaos.
Back in the day when my kid was studying music, some students did intro theory anyway (not remedial, just the first in the sequence) because every school teaches it a little differently.
Next week is our last audition trip. We will have completed 4 in-person auditions and one virtual. We are super lucky that we seem to have finished our circuit fairly early, with long, hard weeks of waiting ahead! The most nerve-wracking part is waiting for financial packages from those acceptances and having conversations reconciling dreams and reality. Where is everyone else in their audition journey?
Iâve been biding time by scouring the forums for clues about possible merit money from each institutionâŠit only makes me more nervous!

Weâre still fairly early in our audition journey. First audition is Tuesday 2/6. Next on is on 2/16, and the final one is 3/6. Then the hard task of waiting, lol.

My daughterâs last in-person audition is next week as well. 3 down, 2 to go. She may do a virtual one after that depending on what she hears from these. And I get you on the merit money. She has heard back from one offering generous merit scholarships for both academics and music. A couple of others have released academic merit, but it sounds like she will be waiting until after April 1 for the remainder of her music merit notificationsâŠif she gets them. Fingers crossed since her top choice as of now is OOS.
