Class of 28 Undergrad/Class of 26 Grad: a thread to capture the journey of applications, pre screens, tours and auditions

We have updated info about the Curtis audition for double bass, which is different from other strings and could vary year to year for all I know!

  • Nothing is accompanied
  • No callbacks

We had the same at Michigan! It was so welcoming, the professor that auditioned my son was so positive. It’s in my son’s top 2. The other one is Butler University here in Indy. The viola professor there has really been amazing.

Wow - that’s interesting. It’s weird when some want accompaniment and some don’t. Certain pieces I think work better with accompaniment.

Musically the pieces might sound better but if they want to see how solid someone’s pitch is it is more telling without, because the piano is continuously giving accurate pitch points.

I always thought the oppposite- most performers aren’t soloists, so they need to be able to stay in tune with everyone else or even if they are technically correct, they could throw off the ensemble if all the others are pitched differently. I thought having the musicians play accompanied showed that they were aware of the soundscape and not just their own head.

My daughter had her audition for voice at Butler today:). It was a great experience!

Maybe our kids will both be future Bulldogs! In a surprise twist, he also really enjoyed playing for the professor he auditioned for at Ball State today. This was his safety school academically and we never really heard of Ball State being well known for music performance, but the professor is highly regarded. He already has a $5,500 scholarship for academic merit here and the professor teacher told him he’d love to work with him, so it seemed to go very well. He may end up somewhere he didn’t really expect.

Nice!

Anyone attending Mingus this weekend? Crabby daughter loved it last year, and so did I, but can’t go this year.

Is your daughter competing? I don’t know too much about it since we aren’t anywhere near there.

Yes, and I think usually a couple of bands from Cali and Texas, but mostly Jersey and New York. My daughter is ā€˜competing’, we try to think of it more of a communal event, networking and stuff (in case she doesn’t win anything, ha!) . Meets a few kids she has gotten to know from around the country at these events.
