Class of 28 Undergrad/Class of 26 Grad: a thread to capture the journey of applications, pre screens, tours and auditions

Waiting is harder than the audition!

Jacobs Admissions has a new blog and in the welcome post it states, “I should point out, however, that many students will not hear results until mid- to late March. One reason for this is that we have still one more audition weekend to go in early March. In addition, we are dependent on IU main admissions to complete their review before we can offer admission. IU main admission is working on new timeline this year and many will not hear about their admission to IU before March 15. The Jacobs admission decision will therefore come closer to April 1 in many cases.”

Hopefully, your daughter will not have to wait THAT long to hear!

Thank you, where can I find this blog? Yes, based on a comment on her Music application, it appears they are waiting for IU’s decision. We have other schools that will not post until April 1st anyway, so we just have to be patient and wait.

Do you know if this applies to graduate students as well? I am not sure if graduate need to get accepted to school first and then to Jacob school of music

@spog (and anyone else who’s interested) - Here is the website for the blog post: Welcome to our blog! – Jacobs Office of Admissions and Financial Aid

Looking to vent for a second, we are at the end of my son’s auditions and luckily every one has been so smooth and all schools have been so welcoming. We arrived for the last one today, having to travel far and showed up to find out they had sent us information from a previous audition weekend instead of today. Luckily his audition time was accurate, but the rest was not correct including info sessions about the school and meeting staff. All of it is canceled for today and that was not shared with us. The actual date of the audition in the email was also incorrect, so I think they sent us info for the wrong weekend to begin with. I know the admissions staff are busy and probably overwhelmed but it’s putting a bad impression on us. Now they say maybe there will be a virtual session later this week. I’m just frustrated we made travel plans to be here all day as they originally stated to now know we won’t be getting the full experience. Has anyone else run into this? This really is the only time we have had any issues, every audition has been so smooth and so well organized.

It seems like they should accommodate your needs since the mistake was theirs. Were you able to show them the communications you received? If the organized tour and info sessions are cancelled, is it possible to do something to substitute?

Unfortunately nothing so far, we can still make the campus tour at least, the info session didn’t happen and they are saying possibly a virtual option this week. But this is all coming from the students assisting with checkin. I feel bad it’s not their fault but they are handling the questions and now we are finding out admissions sent everyone in our instrument grouping the wrong info.

Can you talk to admissions? They will be horrified but I hope you can tell an actual admissions person, not just students!

Yes! I sent them an email but they are the ones that sent the wrong info, so

So, so sorry this happened to you guys! I can imagine it has been very frustrating. And yes, it doesn’t give the best impression. I guess the only “silver lining” is that it wasn’t just YOUR son they messed up; it was an entire group. Mistakes happen, unfortunately. The real test is how they (admissions and the school) recover. I hope the campus tour went well and you and your son were able to get a more holistic impression of the school.

Thank you! Sadly the campus tour was lackluster and left many of us frustrated that we were not able to get a complete picture of the school. Many traveled a lot farther than we did and we weren’t shown any performance spaces or even a practice room. Sorry to keep complaining we were just so surprised that they don’t seem to be selling the school as much as others have that we have been to. We will see what happens and go from there. Hope everyone else auditioning had a great weekend!

Don’t apologize for venting! If anyone can understand and be sympathetic to the frustrations and disappointments, it’s those of us in this forum.

This happened at two of the schools we went to for auditions. They were using almost all the spaces for either warm-ups or auditions. One of them we had toured before, but the other we had not. So, not seeing the performance spaces was disappointing, even for my composer son.

That was the issue here too, spaces being used for auditions. I knew others here would understand so appreciate being able to vent!

Sorry that happened. Like others have stated, it’s a small comfort that the mistake included everyone in the instrument group and not just your student. So, how’d the audition go? Hopefully this didn’t throw you off too much.

He felt the audition went great! The faculty was very nice and welcoming which helped change the vibe of the whole day.

Kind of similar
. My company HR department is a mess (like many) and my job is
Pretty great though. I didn’t let the sense of inefficiency, disorganization and at times disregard push me away and I’m glad.

That’s how I feel about college admissions offices. They are supposed to reflect the values of an institution, but they don’t always reflect everything about an institution.

It may or may not be a great school, but I wouldn’t let a bad admissions situation sway from what might be a good

So glad that this snafu didn’t affect his experience with faculty and the audition!

Unfortunately we encountered this 3x at the school my son thought initially was his first choice. Their pre-college camp was a hot mess and extremely disorganized, our tour was “cancelled” after we traveled to get there, and audition day was just hours and hours of “waiting” far beyond out scheduled audition. Audition at 9am
didnt get into room until 11 then waited another hour for the interview which was supposed to be right after. It was not a good look and he didn’t wind up there
for other reasons but that was also a huge factor
