Unrelated…D24 got NYO jazz. She has been excited about this for years now. I’m so very excited for her, although will miss her for a month of this last summer of childhood.
Congrats!! It is a wonderful program. My D did their orchestra program last year.
That is amazing! Congrats!
Wonderful!
Congrats! My kid did orchestra last year and might apply again for next year (he’s still a junior). It’s such a fun experience…busy, but fun. We saw several of the concerts (although it was easier to do that last year since most were in the USA). When tix open up for Carnegie, get on the site immediately because if you want front row on the first 2 tiers, those are gone within hours.
Congrats! My son’s friend did too! That’s really exciting.
Oh good thought, I will buy them right away. Sadly will not be making any of the South Africa concerts
Congratulations!!!
Based on two of my students, my son, and two of his friends, NYO experiences are all highly positive. They may not improve as much in their performance as they would from other intensive summer programs, but they all said that they found many like-minded peers in NYO/NYO2/NYO-JAZZ and the friendships are very strong.
Do they all spend first 2 weeks together and then tour separately?
Congratulations!!! That program looks incredible!!
Yes in the past two years. In 2021 they were all in SUNY Purchase because of covid. Not sure how it’s going to be this year.
I hope so, jazz only about 20 kids. Would be nice if they have a bigger group to start.
from what I heard, the Jazz kids are regarded as the coolest
Our D made the orchestra and she arrives at the residency on the 20th of July. I think Jazz will be prepping in the city for Carnegie Hall by then. NYO2 kids might be there the whole time. Orchestra is traveling to South America early August.
Oh - jazz starts about 2 weeks earlier- so likely no overlap
Yes, they have many joint events too, NYO and NYO2 were at SUNY Purchase last year too. There are some small ensemble/chamber opportunities for orchestra players. Awesome community and they keep in touch too!
Congrats, having heard her play a number of times now, she deserves it. I heard her pianist made it too… That group is graduating a number of super talented kids this year, the director has his work cut out for him next year for sure.
Thanks again for the kind words. That pianist is amazing, she always invites him for gigs when he is available.
I’m sure that program will sound amazing again next year, and I know my daughter hopes to continue to associated with it and maybe take some sort of intern role
during the audition this year, heard from some professors that several dual-degree students dropped out from music side after the first year. Any insights on that? Guess many students complete the music degree for personal fulfillment and not for job?
That seems to be somewhat common. I’ve heard anecdotally that a substantial number of initial Columbia-Juilliard dual degree students opt out of Juilliard to focus on Columbia, can’t exactly say why although I’d agree with you that job prospects seem a lot bleaker on the music side of things especially when you could be getting a STEM/finance degree from an Ivy.
