Can I ask what instrument this was for at Eastman? My son is heading there for a jazz audition. The last flight home leaves at 530pm on that day.
Thank you. Is the masterclass format same across all instruments? My child plays the trombone.
Congratulations, @Clara30 !!! Let me know if you start that thread!
Sure, he’s on trombone. He said he knows the horn studio does the same format. Not sure about jazz or others. Hopefully it all works out for your flight!
I’m not sure about all other instruments but my son is on trombone too! So I can say for sure the masterclass was very important for his audition last year. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Happy to help.
Anyone headed to CIM for this upcoming weekend? I’m worried about the storm and snow being forecast, but the other 2 weekends coming up are both “full” for our schedule, so not sure what to do. Very worried about driving in major snow.
We were there last weekend (not for an audition, just a visit). There was snow but we managed ok. I don’t know where you’re from, but that part of the country is used to snow, so they plow and sand and salt and keep the roads in decent shape. We drove from Michigan to Oberlin to Cincinnati to Cleveland to Pittsburgh and we made it ok!
My son just got accepted to UMich! I’m so excited!
Yay! Congrats! What area/instrument?
double bass
BU and IU who? Lol. Any rejections are just pointing you in the right direction. It takes a lot of faith to go through process…but good results do come. Congrats to your son…and you!
Aw thanks - and impressive that you remembered he didn’t get auditions at IU and BU :). UMich will be a great match for him for sure. This is his first actual full acceptance (academic and music) so we’re just happy to know he’ll get to go to college somewhere at least!
So great! Is that for jazz? Congrats to you and your son!
I only remember bc every year there seems to be one or two examples of kids that do everything right…and then get some rejections early…before good news. It can really shake your confidence. BUT every year, those people get great acceptances. It’s one of the reason that I hang around too long. It’s simply to say…hang in there…you’re not special…it’s still early…and it will work out. I’m sure that he’ll get some other great offers. Now the fun begins!
The official program he got into is Classical Performance BMusA: Double Bass. We’re one of those who were trying to straddle music and academics whenever possible. Here’s the description:
The Bachelor of Musical Arts in Performance requires a minimum of 120 credits: coursework is approximately 50% within SMTD and 50% within the liberal arts. The liberal arts coursework can be tailored to a student’s specific interests. Students will elect either a performance or multidisciplinary track.
What a wonderful reason to hang around and help those of us going through this for the first time. You’re awesome.
depending on where you are coming from is what i’m thinking about the snow in Cleveland. I’m driving up from Cincinnati on Saturday when it starts, but columbus doesn’t have any in it’s forecast, so it’s just up at Cleveland, which has pretty good road coverage i think. headed to oberlin for sunday so fingers crossed!
I had a question. D25 got rejected from jacobs after pre screening but got into school of arts and science for biology with decent scholarship. She still wants to take her double bass with her and take some performance classes in the first year. Is there a possibility of getting into jacobs for the bsof program after the first year?
I know that Oberlin has a BM in Musical Arts and did not know about UMichigan. I am wondering how many schools offer this sort of compromise program that offers a combo of performance and liberal arts.
She would need to go through the Jacobs application process again next year–prescreen/audition. I wouldn’t say it’s impossible if she puts the necessary work into her audition repertoire and finds someone to study with privately on campus (I have no idea how that works for non-majors). If accepted, I’m guessing she would need to be willing to add a semester or 2 in order to get all the coursework in for the BSOF. Not only because she would be starting the Jacobs course sequence late, but because we were told (my oldest graduated from IU Jacobs with a BSOF in Voice and History) that BSOFs with lab sciences as the outside field can be difficult to schedule. Lab times tend to conflict with required ensemble times. I would recommend reaching out to the Jacobs office to ask these questions–and the head of the double bass department as well.
