Class of 29 Undergrad/Class of 27 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

Curious if anyone who has heard from CCM has also heard about merit? My daughter was accepted yesterday but there was no mention at all of $$$ - not sure if, like Indiana, it comes out later…thanks!

Congrats on CCM! We haven’t heard anything yet, so I can’t help answer your merit question. What instrument/studio did you hear from? And have others heard from CCM also?

My son is auditioning there on Saturday, percussion performance

If anyone else is in the same boat, my son talked to admissions at Purchase and they said that the deadline was pushed back a week and they are doing it rolling- hoping to let everyone know by the end of this week.

What was CU Boulder like? It looks so big…

Pretty sure one of the UWs

We visited about a year and a half ago during the summer. It’s big, but the campus was pretty, we liked the vibe, it had good access to the town with lots of food options and stuff to do, and it was high on our list. When we were back for the audition it snowed somewhat unexpectedly and kind of a lot! So we didn’t visit much of anything. There were a lot of students and families there, and my son had trouble finding a warmup room. He’d met the bass professor online previously, though, for a trial lesson, and she saw him wandering around and kindly opened her office for him to warm up in! The presentation they did for parents was good and left us with a good impression. It felt like it would be a supportive (as opposed to super competitive) music environment. They had a wind ensemble perform that was really good, and who all clearly liked the prof they had gone there to study with :).

@duff62 Congrats to your daughter! How exciting! I sent you a private message about the CMP program–would love to get your insight.

Good luck to your son! And thanks for the reminder that there’s another round of auditions this weekend. I’ll stop magically hoping to hear this week :).

We finished the “grand tour”. It was a mixed bag regarding the outcomes. One school, we walked away knowing my DD would mever attend there. We didn’t care for the campus, the vibe, or the area the school is located. She didn’t care much for the professor she had a lesson with. One school she LOVED and the professor really wanted her to come study with him. The third school she liked and the professor was very kind to her at lunch, even though she made an uncharacteristic mistake in one of her pieces. The professor assured her that they did not even take that into consideration when looking at thrir admissions decision. He even went as far as to compliment her playing strengths and how musical she is. The 4th school she LOVED and the professor basically told her he would take her in his studio, and was likewise complimentary of her playing abilities. Overall it was a very stressful experience and I am so proud of how well DD played and held her cool. 4 schools in 5 days is not for the faint if heart!
So we did find out, just for reference, that Carnegie Mellon University School of Music has very little merit scholarship for undergraduates. ( They offer 4 students $1,500 per year.) It all goes to graduate students. Plain and simple.

Note: I am sorry to be so vague, but I dont want this information getting back to the schools somehow.

Congrats! The merit comes later, and it can also increase as time goes on. My son’s initial offer there nearly doubled the closet it got to May 1. I’m assuming it happens as other students decline offers.

Can anyone speak to the length of day at Eastman? The info says plan to be there from 9am -5pm, and that there’s a mandatory meeting at 9am, but doesn’t elaborate beyond that on the schedule, with the note that on check in we get the schedule (aside from actual audtion time that we have already). With so few flights out of Rochester, it’s really hard to not have to book an extra night there if they truly must be there until 5pm. There’s a 7pm flight that would work for us, but will that mean we’re dashing away too soon?
Thanks for any advice!

That was very much our experience as well. By the sounds of it, we were there on the same day with the unexpected snowstorm. Quite an adventure for us coming from California.

Atmosphere there was very warm, everyone was welcoming and gave an impression of a supportive environment. Student panel was insightful.

I think the timing can vary depending on instrument. Last year my son’s audition was early afternoon but then the studio held a masterclass that evening and invited some people who auditioned to play. So it was good we planned to stay an extra night, we were flying to his next audition early the next morning. The airport is only about 20 min from the school and very small so you don’t need as much time to check in as a typical larger airport. You could try reaching out to the school to make sure the studio doesn’t have anything extra planned that evening. My son is there now and his studio is having a recital for people who are auditioning to attend and it’s not until that evening after the audition day is done.

Does it hurt my child’s chance of acceptance to Eastman if he doesn’t attend the masterclass? His instrument has the masterclass in the evening, but we have to be home that day and there is 6 hour drive ahead us.
Also, do we have to be at school by 9am even the audition is scheduled in the afternoon?

I asked my son‘s opinion and he said yes, it would hurt your chances if you did not attend. Your child won’t know if they are chosen to play until after they audition. If they are chosen (or not) and don’t show it may show a lack of interest. But you can always talk with the prof if you have strong reason for not attending and hopefully they would be understanding.

My DD had a memory slip in one of her auditions. She did not stop and found her way back. This was at the beginning of her audition. The rest of her pieces were played very well. She was, however, devastated! She did not want to go on a tour of the school, which was planned after her audition. I tried to reassure her, but she was very upset. At lunch she happened to be sitting next to two of the professors that were in the room. One professor right then and there told her he could see the devistated look on her face when she made the memory slip. He told her not to worry about the memory slip, and that they did not even consider it, as her overall playing was very good. He mentioned what was fantastic in her playing. And the other professor sitting next to her told her her audition was very good. She is not reading into it and has no idea if she will even get in. She and the professor had a great conversation after that for 20 min and my DD would be thrilled to go there if she gets in.
I only mention this, becauae you just never know what they are looking for. She was very well prepared with her pieces and this memory slip came as a shock to her. She proceeded to audition at other schools after this incident, and played very well. This is all so mentally taxing.
These professors know how incredibly stressful this is and would rather work with a student who plays musically, in tune and rhythmically accurate, than one who can get all the notes in with no slips. He assured her they took no points off for her memory slip. I am waiting anxiously to see if in deed she gets accepted there.

My daughter was, too, for vocal performance!

We need to start an acceptance/merit thread like they had last year. That was so helpful to us when we were choosing which schools to apply to.
