Class of 29 Undergrad/Class of 27 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

Were you able to stick around for the evening jam session at Oberlin? We missed the big band rehearsal but all of the kids auditioning were invited to join in on the jam session. It was really fun and my son played on a couple of tunes.

Anyone have experience with admittance to a music program but not the university? Is there anything to be done (like an appeal?) or is it a complete loss?

This is tricky, because it really depends on what school. A couple years ago, my daughter was going to apply to Princeton for a BA in piano performance. The teacher there, who gave my daughter a trial lesson, was thrilled to have my D in her studio, but gave her a very strong warning that the teachers there can not interfere with the academic school’s decision on admission. She basically had to get into Princeton with no help on the music side. This is not true of all the universities that have a music school. Some of the schools my D (25 viola) is currently applying to told her that the professors can give a sway for admissions(CMU).

I will say, if the academic school denies the student, it is likely not going to work out in the long run. But it may be worth a call to see if there is an appeal process. Like I said it depends on the school.

@momto5kidz Princeton does not have performance degrees, right? It does offer a performance certificate. But it is not an audition school and the degree is a BA, a liberal arts degree.

To apply for a BA in music or anything else, if a student has talent and background in music, then a music supplement should be submitted with recording/video, music resume and music letter(s) of recommendation. The studio teacher may or may not listen to or see the supplement.

This is very different from the situation with audition schools that offer BM’s. @nicoley43’s kid might try talking to a music professor, chair or contact to see if they might want to advocate for them, but I would not rely on any chances for an appeal to be successful.

Yes, we were there for the jam as well. The vocalists were pretty good. It was interesting to see how some of the musicians dealt with them as it’s definitely good to have experience with vocalists. It was fun watching the drummers tag each other in. The young woman on the drums has had some pretty high level experience at camps and competitions. Has your son played with her?

You are probably correct. I can’t remember 100% if she sent in a video to Princeton. I was pretty sure she did though. She was applying to major in piano. I don’t know what the specifics of it were. She had a trial lesson with a professor. The admissions process is different at the universities, so it is difficult to say how to handle this situation. I would inquire about an appeal. But that is likely to go nowhere.

You cannot major in piano at Princeton. Or in performance in general.

I saw someone who got accepted to CCM today. Has anyone else heard? Wondering if they’re releasing by studio or if everyone is about to hear.

He hadn’t played with her before then. The only camp he’s been to that I’d consider “high level” is Litchfield last year. But, yes, the vocalists were really good and brought a lot of enthusiasm and the mid-tune drummer switches were fun to watch. My son was the pianist wearing a beanie over long hair. We still have Eastman this Friday and Jacobs the following Saturday, then it’s wait and worry time, I suppose.

Thanks - it makes me feel better that we’re not the only ones still waiting.

Yes, and some “highly encouraged”- strings

They have certificate in Instrumental performance, not a major. And they have a neat exchane program with the RCM.

D23 submitted her flute performance portfolio and had sample lessons/conversations with the Flute professor at Princeton - I do not think it was a deciding factor in her acceptance, but I know music department faculty members are reviewing music portfolio submissions, based on the feedback provided to my kid after admissions process was concluded.

I agree wiht @compmom - appeal based on audition/supplemental portfolio would be problematic.

CMU requested XX century piece and NEC & Northwestern requested XX or XXI centrury piece for their auditions - that was for flute.

Loss, probably. D23 was waitlisted by the university participating in the dual degree program with NEC, accepted to NEC for instrumental performance though. No luck in waitlist status change at the academic institution, even with NEC professors advocating for her, as we learned after.

We heard good news from CCM for BM viola on Monday.

Congratulations!! And thanks for letting me know. I think the other person also heard on Monday (2/24), for Commercial Music Production, so either that’s a coincidence or a round of acceptances went out that day.

Yeah, it was my D25 who got her acceptance into the Commercial Music Program on Monday (2/24). When we were there during auditions, one of the CCM admissions folks said that decisions are often released by the university around 4PM on Mondays.

That’s really good to know. I see that the other person accepted (duff62) was accepted Feb 10, also a Monday, so I can calm my hoping/refreshing for a few days. At least for that school. Thanks!
