It used to be fabulous; I don’t have recent info, though. Good network and cross-pollination across different artistic disciplines.
My S21 is a 4th year drama student at UNCSA. Happy to tell you about student life but I don’t know much about the music program. Pm me if you like.
My son got into Case Western! They have a joint music program with CIM, and he would love to work with the bass prof there. We’re not sure if that’s an option, and how involved in CIM ensembles he could be, so we have research to do. But we’re pretty excited this is an option for him! No merit, though, unless music awards come later.
Congrats! Would he be seeking a dual degree (aka double major)? My daughter was a CIM student who added a BA English from CWRU in year 2. I only ask because there was an additional cost for the 2nd degree - to the tune of $10k/year. If that’s not the case, I will say that Case is a fantastic program and although I may be biased, Cleveland is an incredible location for college students. Good luck!
He’d be a music major at Case, so he won’t need to do a dual degree unless he decides to double major. The hope is that he’ll take a full set of liberal arts college classes through Case, and do his private lessons and be in ensembles with CIM. It sounds like whether or not it works out this way varies, so we’re going to have to ask a lot of questions. I’ve seen some reports that CWRU has its own orchestra and that CWRU students sometimes don’t get to play in the CIM ensembles, and whether or not they can do private lessons with CIM professors is handled on a case by case basis. When we chose schools 9 months ago, we were less sure he was going to go for a full on performance path. He’s more inclined towards that now, so we’ll have to see whether or not Case will work for him. That said, as his parents, we see a lot of interest and potential in music-related stuff. For example, he has been participating in a cinema club at school doing audio design for other students’ videos, and they won a 1st place national award this fall for one of the videos. His favorite subjects in school (after music) are physics and art. He has broad interests and skills, and we’d like for his college experience to give him opportunities to try lots of things and figure out what’s right for him.
All that said, it’s really good to know expanding his degree might cost even more. With no merit (which is where we are right now) Case estimates our cost to be $87,000! OMG!!
Almost 90K is a lot of money. Did he apply for other schools with strong music programs?
90K is crazy - most of his schools are close to that, but we’re anticipating merit money. He’s been accepted in performance at UMich, CCM, and University of Denver (Lamont) (waiting on Oberlin). We’ve only heard about merit from Lamont so far - $48k. We’ll see if any of the others can match that.
He got accepted in-state too (University of Washington) which will be much, much less, but the music program there not what he’s hoping for.
Also a word of caution for kids this year or in future years. After getting accepted at one school, the professor emailed to say she’d recommended our son for a ‘significant’ scholarship, but he should let her know if he didn’t think he’d be attending. He responded that he was still waiting on a lot of schools, but that he was leaning towards other schools (my kid likes to be honest). She rescinded the scholarship recommendation and when the official merit offer came it was for $0. He might as well have declined the offer when he said “leaning” - that school is $76k and he definitely won’t attend without merit.
We are in Washinton state also, near Seattle. My D didnt want to apply to any in state options. Washington state is not known for it’s music schools that is for sure, unfortunately. It is known for science and tech.
My D applied to all top level conservatories. I wish we had some safety schools. IU, Peabody, SFCM, Eastman, CMU, BU, CIM.
Heard from only 2 of the 7…SFCM accepted 35K merit (not sure about financial aid) and CMU rejected.
I feel terrible for anyone who is still waiting to hear from most of their schools. It’s so scary. We did that with our first son and he got something like 6 rejections before some acceptances came in. We worked hard to have some slam dunks this time around (Western Washington, for example) so that we would have some reassurance along the way. But it worked out for my older son! And hopefully it will for you too. SFCM is already a great option, with good merit! And if your kid got auditions all of those places, there’s a lot of reason to be hopeful.
And I agree, the music options in WA state, and even on the West Coast in general, are a lot more limited than elsewhere in the country.
Editing to add that CMU is crazy hard to get into. My older son applied there for engineering and had the stats to make it, but didn’t get in. One of the 6 rejections! Even for music, the academic expectations are super high.
When my son had a trial lesson with the Case professor, we were told that if he
were to do the joint program with CIM, he would have lessons with Case professors paid by CIM, and he would be in Case Orchestra. We also had a chance to see the music department building. It was disappointing to say the least, especially after seeing the Oberlin a day before.
CIM orchestra is made of CIM students as far as I know. Every kid at least in our instrument that I’ve seen in the CIM orchestra is a conservatory student, not a Case student.
That’s really good to know - both your experience and Jarinko’s. I’ve read a few threads (from years ago) that made me think lessons with CIM professors might be an option, but we’ll clearly have to confirm that. Here’s one in case it helps anyone else: Orchestra at CWRU? - #10 by TytoAlba
Has anyone heard from IU or CCM re: merit/talent $$$?
Has anyone from the March audition dates at IU heard anything? We have heard nothing from the school or the university. D viola BM auditioned 3/7
My son (jazz piano) auditioned at IU on 3/8 and received an email from the relevant professor telling him he was accepted into the studio and would be recommended for merit on 3/10. He also received an acceptance letter from the University on 3/13. I would expect merit aid info to come pretty late from IU given how late the last auditions were.
My daughter has a good friend who auditioned at IU on 3/7 for Voice. He still hasn’t heard anything.
IU Jacobs says on their scholarship page that scholarship notifications will be released by 4/1. Done this with 3 kids now. All 3 heard right around that date—give or take a couple days.
Anyone know when to expect Eastman decisions?
For CCM, not exactly. Nothing in terms of talent, yet. However, we were looking around D’s UC portal, and it looks like some merit aid was added to her financial aid section recently. We haven’t gotten a summary email/notification of this, though, and so we’re not completely sure.
