My niece just began classes at a LAC and they have class on Labor Day. I just assumed as a Federal holiday schools would not be in session. I know in the south schools begin before Labor Day but always have Labor Day off.

Are there many colleges or secondary schools that attend classes on Labor Day or other holidays?

One of mine has classes that day, the other doesn’t. Denison has no breaks at all fall semester, just Thanksgiving. I like it though, because then they have a whole week.

Back in the stone age when I went to college, my little LAC in Pennsylvania had classes on Labor day, and so does D (NY) this year. I just assumed it’s a function of being a residential college - didn’t even think of the public vs. private thing.

No classes at S1’s big state u. and of course no school at S2’s high school BUT there is football practice in the afternoon so it’s really not a day off. Never been able to go anywhere Labor Day weekend for 4 years because of football. Still, I’ll be sad when it’s over.

My son attended a big state U. When someone in his freshman Econ class asked the professor why the first test was scheduled for Labor Day, and wasn’t that a holiday, the reply was “You’re students, not labor.”

Yes, classes on Labor Day at my Ds LAC in the midwest, where school started 2 weeks ago for Freshmen. Never heard of this before, am shocked, and a little appalled. Aren’t the professors workers too? All the state schools start classes the day after.

D1’s school in NY doesn’t have school. D2’s school in PA does. Around the Midwest, I don’t know of any that do. D1’s school does not have a fall break. D2’s school does. Go figure.

Our D has classes on Labor Day, she discovered that fact on Wed. After talking to friends it looks like the private colleges have classes and the public colleges do not. Daughter gets a week off in early Oct for Fall Break. I am not sure it is a good idea, perhaps too early in the transition phase for both of us.
