I thought I read on their website that said freshman are guaranteed housing. And it’s mandatory they stay on campus.
Freshman are indeed guaranteed on campus housing. It’s the upperclassmen who are not.
Freshmen may not get the dorm/room they had their heart set on, but they will be on campus somewhere.
What surprised some parents of the current freshmen class is that on campus housing for sophomores is not guaranteed - there is a lottery system. We knew that early on but some didn’t get the memo. There are some dorms available for upperclassmen but not near enough rooms for all. The apartments downtown are very expensive and they start leasing for the next school year in September which freaks parents out. But apartments get much cheaper as you get further away from campus. It all works out.
We have committed.
My daughter is in the business school and joined CUBS freshman year which is housed in Douthit. She moved off campus sophomore year.
No need to panic about housing; it all works out in the end. I know kids who specifically chose dorms others didn’t want. Mine chose the high rises because that’s where the RISE LLC was located; she picked it over the Honors College dorms. She liked living there; it was close to Hendrix and The Barn where they went for trivia nights and other activities. The shoeboxes are right by the stadium and “Core.” There are great points to every dorm. They can also check out the LLCs; it was a great experience for DD who came from OOS and didn’t know anyone else.
We are OOS and didn’t apply until October. We toured last Friday the day after she was accepted. My daughter is leaning towards the hybrid model for dorms. They also updated a dorm this past year and are updating another one next year- so I think even the basic dorms will be ok.
What are the hybrid dorms?
I am 53 years old and my mom still talks about how awful my dorm was freshman year, lol. But I had the best time and am still close with the group of women I met on my hall. We’re not worried about housing at all. It’s one year and it can be character building, ha ha
Did your daughter like CUBS? My son was admitted to the Business school and is considering CUBS. I know Douthit is newer. How did she like living in Douthit and the CUBS experience?
I have an older daughter that graduated in 2022 and lived in the RISE LLC her freshman year. She was in Lever I think and liked it. They have tutoring for the RISE kids in the dorms in the evenings, (she tutored her soph, jr and sr year) and it was great. Lots of kids use the service.
Yes, this is another nuance to clemson.
Many apply on 8/1 just after midnight.
Tip for next years class:
1)Use the clemson application and NOT the common app.
2)The CU app is EASY & takes 10 minutes and you get an immediate time stamp (for housing priority)
3) The common app may take 24/48 hrs to transmit to CU
If one of the roommates has an early window for housing, they just need to put in names of others. The suites overlooking the stadium go fast.
She said it was worth it, she liked Douthit and CUBS. She applied to honors for the freshman second semester and also said the benefits are worth it ($1000 a year, same as CUBS). She has 3 great advisors that she actively meets with.
They have several individual bathrooms with a sink, shower etc on each floor. It’s also coed. And the best part is custodians clean them unlike the suite style private baths.
Has anyone received their acceptance package yet?
So bathrooms are co-ed too??
Yes, but only the sinks are in a common area, and there are also sinks in every private bathroom.
My son also lives in Douthit. He belongs to CUBS. Here is a pic of the bathroom! Hope this helps you visualize! They close door behind them and have sink shower and toilet to themselves. There is also an area that just has sinks- so if kids need to wash hands and brush teeth, that is available anytime.
how many of these rooms do they have per kid? Does a line form in the morning for showers?
My son said only 1x he had to walk down hall to the next bathroom to get one. Otherwise one has always been available for him. It’s not a problem. There are 4 bathrooms like this plus 2 sink areas in each bathroom grouping.
That was my next question too. Like only 4 seems like not enough for an entire floor?!
