Clich

Please list the kind of essays that are considered clich

death of grandparent

list of high scores, achievements, hobbies.explanation of low SAT score,GPA.
preaches.etc.

Sports/athletics

The big game, the big breakup, a sports injury

woot, more more!

what exactly is the “sports/athletics” one? im doing one about ultimate frisbee!!!

my trip to europe

immigration to america

Would writing about coming out be too clich

I love doing math problems in my spare time

I scored that epiiiiiicccllly awwwesome goal and won the game

hmm I have a friend who wrote an essay on immigration to America and got into UPenn so it can’t be that bad of a topic.

it really depends on how you write it.

It has been my dream to be a ________ ever since I was 2 years old. Yes, that’s right. I didn’t know how to tell the difference between a circle and a square at the time, but I knew for sure that I was destined to be a ________.

whats the cliche sports/athlete essay?

It really depends on how you write it, however:

“How my mission trip changed my life. FOREVER.”

My english teacher told me the cliche sports/athlete one would be either working hard to barely make the cut for the team, going from being the worst player on the team to MVP, or becoming a star athlete with an illness you were born with. I’m sure there’s others but I’m just repeating what I’ve been told.

Honestly you can still write about these topics, just do it well.

childhood/immigrant hardship
hardship in general

I agree with the just do it well.
As long as it shows character BEYOND “perseverance & hard work,” which is what many of these cliche topics feature.

i went to africa to help poor little orphans, and omg i know truly how terrible it is, and how lucky i am now! throw in some stuff about what you learned about yourself, and pushing your limits and returning from the trip as a stronger person, etcetc…

so what essays are NOT cliche…?

a truly talented writer can turn a crap prompt into pure gold. i would avoid the cliche prompts listed but almost anything else will end up being okay. to make an essay truly stand out, write it so that the main focus is what you learned. make yourself pop off the page.
