Clothing Stores Near These Colleges

Okay, so I’m a bit of a shopaholic and am unsure of whether or not I can live without a mall near the college I am going to, or at least some good and inexpensive clothing stores (I’m a female btw). Does anyone know if there are any malls or good stores near these colleges and please specify which. FYI, I can’t take a car w/ me to college so are any in walking distanceor are there readily avaliable shuttles/other transportation there? Here’s the list of places I’m wondering about and can’t seem to find a lot of info on:

Pepperdine University
College of the Holy Cross
Stanford University
Duke University
Cornell University
Dartmouth College
Pomona College
University of Notre Dame
Davidson College
Santa Clara University
Villanova University

I’ve heard that Dartmouth is sort of in the middle of nowhere…

You’ll probably have good luck with malls though at Stanford - [how far away is Stanford from San Francisco? - Google Maps](<a href=“Google Maps”>http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=how%20far%20away%20is%20Stanford%20from%20San%20Francisco%3F&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl)

Additionally, SF is roughly 30-45 minutes away, and I believe there is a train, if not a bus, that ought to run for a decent price. You could probably shop in SF on the weekends.

If shopping is really a big deal to you, then maybe you ought to look into some city schools.

edit: Notre Dame is kind of in the middle of nowhere as well. Gorgeous campus though and nice small, surrounding town.

Duke: http://orientation.studentaffairs.duke.edu/images/Dining_Shopping%20Map.pdf</a></p>

The Stanford Mall is an outdoor, beautiful, and upscale mall that is walking/biking distance from the dorms at Stanford…it sits on the far edge of the campus area. Brendanww is right that the Caltrain into SF is a great option for Stanford students, and you can walk/bike to the Caltrain station or take the campus shuttle.
Westfield Valley Fair Mall is 3 miles from Santa Clara University. They claim that they are the largest and best enclosed mall in Northern California.

notre dame and dartmouth are yeah pretty much in the middle of nowhere. im sure wiht pepperdine in malibu youll be able to get some great shoppoing. villanova is not too far from king of prussia mall, one of the BEST malls in the the entire universe =)

Cornell has the Ithaca Commons about a half mile west of campus, which features a lot locally owned stores, including a handful that sell clothing and fashion apparel. I’m a big fan of the local thrift store, Trader Ks. I once bought a fantastic French-made dress shirt, complete with cuffs, for seven bucks.

About two miles north of campus is the mall, which features just about every mid-level national retailed you may want (Gap, Old Navy, American Eagle, Target, Sears, Abercrombie, Victoria’s Secret, Dicks, Best Buy). I never shopped at these places, because quite frankly, it’s a rip-off.

Both are easily accessible via public transportation.

Farther afield, students who would rather spend a weekend shopping instead of snowshoeing or kayaking go to Syracuse or Waterloo. Syracuse has one of the biggest malls in the country. Waterloo has outlet stores. It’s pretty easy to find like-minded students traveling to either mall on any given weekend.

It’s not the Magnificent Mile of Fifth Avenue. But you knew that when you decided to apply to a school in Ithaca, NY in the first place. Ithaca boasts a lot of things that most places cannot.

Pepperdine University has Malibu Country Mart, which is a mix of high end boutiques to local boutiques that carry high end designers, they have Ralph Lauren(basically every brand from Polo to Ralph Lauren Collection), they have Madison, James Perse, Chrome Hearts, Juicy Couture, 7for All Man Kind, Ron Herman, etc…

However if you’re the type of girl who goes for Forever 21, Abercrombie, AE, which is not designer at all, you can take a bus down the Pacific Coast Highway for about 15-20 mins to the third street promenade in Santa Monica, CA where you have basically every mall store teenage girls like from banana republic, gap, ae, aldo, steve madden, urban outfitters, anthropologie, etc.

BTW pomona college doesn’t really have typical mall clothing stores near them, you would need a car to get to the Ontario Mills Mall. I think the ones near Pomona college are for middle aged women such as Chicos, etc.

But it does not stop people from shopping. New Hampshire also has no sales tax (this combined with many on-line shopping places having free or $5 shipping)

i live in claremont and i know the malls near pomona college. there is montclair and ontario mills and a good 10-15 minute drive on the freeway will get you to victoria gardens. also, there is a local mall called the village.

Just go to [MapQuest Maps - Driving Directions - Map](http://www.mapquest.com), put in the location and the business type you’re looking for. It will give you tons of results within a certain radius.

As for Davidson, the town itself is quite small. There are some shops, but I can’t recall what type. There is however, a very good shopping area a few exits down the interstate.

You could always shop online, too…FedEx Ground delivery will reach you at any college, no matter how remote.

Very little shopping in Davidson itself other than CVS and a few specialty shops, amazing shopping, both boutique/specialty and chain store, at the exits south of Davidson off I-77–you will need a friend with a car to get there if you don’t have one though. There are a few small and appealing shops in the new shopping center at the Davidson exit, but even that is about a mile from downtown and campus.

Villanova is just a few minutes from the [King of Prussia Mall](http://www.kingofprussiamall.com/), one of the largest in the country. If you have a friend with a car, it’s very easy to get to.

And villanova has a shuttle that goes to the mall…or at least it did in 05!!!

Anyone know more about Dartmouth or Santa Clara?

Duke is definitely far away from any upscale shopping. No regular shuttles to any shopping areas that I have ever heard of. Here is the website for the shops on 9th Street just to the east of East Campus where first year students live. You can see for yourself what types of shops are there:

[Ninth Street alternative shopping district, Durham, NC, aka 9th Street](<a href=“ninthst.com - ninthst Resources and Information.”>http://www.ninthst.com/)

Oh, and also note that the website has not been updated for years and many of these shops no longer exist. Lots of empty storefronts on this street.

There is a mall with a Macy’s not far from Notre Dame, but that is about it. If you have a car there is a really nice outlet mall (Coach, J Crew, Hollister, Calvin Klein, BCBG etc) less than an hour away in Michigan City.

if you are looking to buy nice clothes within quick walking or driving distance of Dartmouth, you are limited to Talbots; Rare Essentials (higher fashion, but expensive). There is an ll Bean; EMS; Northface for casual clothing. There is also “mall” in nearby West Lebanon with some fairly nice clothes shops (not chain stores). Otherwise, you’re better off getting your clothes on a road trip to Boston.
