The most recently published Common Data Set cites the numbers I posted above. If this year is consistent – and we have no reason to think they would buck the trend and have a smaller waitlist – they probably offered waitlist spots to 1/4 to 1/3 of applicants.
okay
So glad to have this thread.
My daughter is on WL for Information System major.
Any information when they will start releasing waitlist decisions?
CMU just pushed back commitment date to 5/15 by email notification yesterday. I think that will influence WL a bit.
No clue…
I called the admissions office few days ago and asked this question. The number I got from them was - 1500 applicants have been offered to be in waitlist this year.
This number was for all the colleges in CMU combined. They did not give me a breakup at the individual schoo levell within CMU.
That number doesn’t sound right. They’ve typically offered waitlist spots to 2x to 3x as many students. Perhaps 1500 was for one school/college.
That’s interesting and certainly much lower than what we have heard in the past.
Hello all!
based on the information provided in this thread and my personal research on carnegie mellon’s waitlist antics, i’ve come to the conclusion that i should just give up on getting into CMU if i was waitlisted? i’ve seen the ridiculously low waitlist acceptance rates as well as talks that CMU put nearly all potential rejects on the priority waitlist as a marketing tactic, which makes me concerned that i might not get off the list. taking into consideration that CMU also does not rank their waitlists, should i just focus on what other schools i have on mind right now?
Absolutely. Waitlists are essentially rejections with a very slim chance of reconsideration. It’s not just at CMU. You should select from the schools you’ve been accepted to and fall in love with it.
If there’s a pleasant surprise from CMU in a month or two, that’s great - but statistically highly unlikely.
I heard it is nearly impossible for CS majors not sure for other majors chances of coming off of waitlist .
I thought CMU doesn’t necessarily admit by Major and anyone wanting to switch can do so pretty easily?
Carnegie Mellon considers major but admits by college/school/program. CS is its own college, the School of Computer Science. Internal transfers are highly competitive.
Hey, does anyone know the due date for the waitlist form and the 300 word submission?
I accidentally submitted it too early without completing my writing way back during March something, and I emailed admissions (Very early April) and they said I could send them my full updates form and they would add it to my file, but I’m not sure if it’s too late by now. I don’t remember what the due date to opt-in was. April 10th? April 14th/15th?
it’s never too late to submit if the reply form still shows up in your status portal. even if you feel like you’re running out of time, you can always just accept the waitlist offer, leave the 300 word submission blank, then email admissions a couple of days after the due date, because they said they’re going to release waitlist decisions by june 30, which means there’s still a lot of time for decisions to be made. just keep in mind that if you email them, there’s no guarantee that they’ll add whatever you attached in that email to your admissions file, whereas if you typed up the 300 words on the reply form, it’s guaranteed they’ll see it. the main thing you should focus on is completing whatever you want to write as part of your 300-word submissions ASAP, and don’t half-a** it, because you want to make it count. hope that helps!
100%! Move on to your accepted colleges and focus your attention there as the WL game is a hit or a miss. Though my oldest son got off the WL in 2021 admission cycle for both NYU and UPenn, I don’t think its a norm. By that time, he had already accepted Rutgers Honors and was excited about going there, was making friends etc.
Wherever you go, there will be many opportunities for you to pursue.
It should say in your portal on the form, if you can still access it, but I believe it is 4/15. At least that’s what my son said.
Thank you! I got it in today to the admissions email and so they should see it tomorrow and have time to put it on my file
Also @agoda too, thanks for the help and good luck on the waitlist and exploring your accepted schools!
Any info on how many they have accepted RD this year ? I heard most of students at my sons school
are also waitlisted compared to previous yrs.
2024 is a waitlist year
