BTW, we’re in Northern Virginia.
@mamawitch Thank you for taking the time to help me figure this out, so overwhelming! We are also trying to figure out what we can attend since we are also OOS
@MommaBearof2 - we have never officially received a letter about the PLP/honors just an email about the Presidential Scholars selection day.
@mamawitch I see a letter coming today in the mail from the Office of the President. Do you think that is PLP or Honors? I think I’d rather her get into the honors program. PLP is so much work.
On a side note, I have a BS in math and minor in secondary education from CNU. It was 20 years ago but I received an excellent education and some of my professors are still teaching at CNU. I won’t tell you how much tuition was in the 90’s. ?
@melmrs My daughters PLP acceptance letter came from the Office of the President and Honors came from Admissions.
Good to know!! It seems like the job placement rate is pretty much 100% for someone wanting to be a HS Math teacher. We are OOS so the tuition is even more $$$. But to be honest, compared to the New England schools, OOS tuition is a bargain!! Most school up here are around $60 - $70K/year!!!
We are in state. These were separate letters. She got her PLP letter on Saturday and the letter with the magnet on Monday.
cheers2020, Thanks so much!! This is very helpful.
Daniellr, Congrats to your daughter and thank you very much for the info…very, very helpful!!!
My daughter got her acceptance into PLP but nothing from honors which has us truly bummed. I compared my daughter’s letter to her older sister’s letter from 3 years ago. The letters were identical but my oldest got $2000 to study abroad whereas my younger daughter only got $1000. How much study abroad money did your students get?
@melmrs Mine got $1000 as well.
Just saw on my informed delivery email another CNU letter coming from admissions. Hoping it is her Honors acceptance. The PLP one was from the office of the President. This whole process of getting snail mail acceptances has really stressed us out. Everyone is getting letters at different times. A friend of my daughters got both her PLP and honors letters on Saturday. We live in the same area. Maybe they are sending them out at different times based on Last name? It would have been less stressful for everyone to open a portal and receive the news at the same time.
Yep. $1000 towards study abroad in the PLP letter. We haven’t heard a peep about honors. If you don’t get in to PLP and/or Honors, will the kids receive a letter informing them of that decision?
Yes, my daughter got a letter yesterday saying she didn’t get into Honors. ? She has a high GPA, but her SAT was 1300. Only 10 points off, but that was enough.
Thanks @vafamily. I was wondering about that. I sure hope my daughter doesn’t get a rejection letter today. It will be a blow to her self esteem. I hate that they put so much weight on the SATs. My daughter just squeaked by with the minimum ACT so it could go either way.
Did anyone get a financial aid letter yet? Someone on FB said they got an email and it was in their spam folder, but that doesn’t sound right because CNU mails everything. I thought I’d check with this group.
We haven’t received anything about financial aid.
I received an email on 1/20 letting me know my financial aid info was available and to click on the portal link they sent.
We are pleased to inform you that your financial aid package for Christopher Newport University for the 2020-2021 Aid Year is now available.
Your aid package can be reviewed by logging into the following portal:
At honors day, they said 80% of the Honors Students also do PLP.
My DS attended a Presidential Scholar Interview a few weeks ago, but the letter inviting him indicated that he was automatically accepted to Honors and PLP even if he is not chosen to be a Presidential Scholar. They mentioned the Presidential Scholar decisions would be sent in late February. Should I expect info about Honors/PLP separately if he is not chosen as a Presidential Scholar? He already did his Honors/PLP interview in the Fall. The last interview was with someone from admissions strictly for Presidential Scholar.
Is anyone waiting on the second round decisions for PLP? My daughter applied to the Honors Program, but she was not accepted because her SAT score wasn’t high enough. So she applied to PLP at the end of January, after the early deadline. They said decisions would come by April 1, but I was hoping they would come earlier than that. I was just wondering if anyone else applied and whether anyone has heard anything yet.
Yes, my D applied for 2nd round PLP and has yet not received a reply. She plans to wait until April 1 before deciding on her college decision. FWIW, she has also been accepted at South Carolina, Temple, JMU, VCU and VT. She’s teetering between VT and CNU (completely different experiences) so the outcome of PLP will be impactful towards her decision.
I feel compelled to say that I had very limited familiarity with CNU prior to our recent PLP visit. I walked away quite impressed with the University and its leadership. It’s an up-and-coming hidden gem, particularly for students seeking a smaller institution with a high degree of access and engagement with faculty. The facilities are remarkable.
