Coast Guard practices response to terrorist attack

Coast Guard Academy cadets participated in a simulated terrorist threat exercise from 5:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. today in New London Harbor.

For the fifth consecutive year, the academy hosted the annual New War Threat Exercise, which was created after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

In this year?s scenario, first class cadets were trained to stop an attack against the harbor by using simulated Coast Guard cutters, teaming with the Boston-based Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST), and employing the nationally-mandated Incident Command and National Incident Management System.

Spoke to my son about this today…it was exclusively the 1/c but it was quite an exercise…part of it involved defending the Electric Boat Shipyard which is just up the Thames from CGA.

Coastie’s ROCK! I’m glad they’re on our side. Not to change the subject but at USMMA they were talking about port security. Really an awesome feat considering all thats shipped into this country on a daily basis. I actually woke up in one of the classes we’d attended on our parent’s week-end when the guy was talking about the security of our ports. The maritime shipping field is going to begin using something like what UPS does, a tad bit more advanced, in that it will have scanners that log in & out the storage containers and contents. Where it’s going, where its been & the like. More importantly, whats inside. Coasties will watch the harbors, and mariners will watch whats inside their cargo. It was very interesting. I think we can’t be too relaxed on what is coming in & out of our ports. Read the post : USMMA recognized by Sect. of Transportation for 9/11 relief efforts in the USMMA threads and how it relates to this. 9/11 triggered a wake up call. We truly aren’t safe without the training and new technology. Hey! Wait a minute! Heartcross! You dirty dawg. I see whats going on here! Get over to our side and post some new threads too. Its just not fair…

Here’s some more info on the drill yesterday. The New London Day does a great job covering the academy and the military in general. Unfortunately the author of this article is leaving his beat at the Day to take a job with General Dynamics, which runs Electric Boat in New London.
