Hello. I would like to discuss my chaces of getting into UCLA political science department and other colleges/universities.
I guess I’d have to post my “stats”
My Freshmen weighted gpa was around 3.6
Sophomore weighted was 3.8
and Junior year weighted was around 4.3
I took honors math classes since freshmen year but my scores were not impressive.
I took Honors Algebra 2 my freshmen year and ended with B- and C
Honors Geometry my sophomore year and ended with B’s both semesters
and took Honors Pre-Calc my Junior year and ended with B+'s both semesters.
my math scores are not impressive ( probabaly the only korean student with nonimpressive math scores)
My scores were terrible my freshmen/sophomore year so i decided to step it up my junior year.
received all A’s for Honors Chem, APUSH ( received 4 on the AP test), American Lit, and other classes such as culinary arts.
I’ve done about 100 hours of community service and been involved in student government since freshmen year.
Freshmen year : Class senator
Sophmore year : Class Senator
Junior year : Student Association Parliamentarian
Senior year : Class Parliamentarian (elected for next school year)
Ive been part of the soccer program sine freshmen year and was the captain of the varsity soccer team since junior year.
Senior year I’ll be taking : Shakespere, Marriage & Family, Honors Biology ( Anatomy and physiology ) , Ap statistics, and Honors Physics.
Ill be partaking in Varsity soccer(captain) , student government, Varsity flag football, and National Honors society ( if possible)
I scored 32 on my Act.
oh and i’ve been in the states since i was in 7th grade ( idk if that will play any role in my admission)
What are my current chances of getting into UCLA political science and what are some schools that I have a chance of getting into with my scores rn? and since my scores arent great, what can i do to increase my chances of getting accepted into UCLA political science department?
oh and my curent regular gpa is 3.647 and weighted (honors) is around 3.9
What’s your UC GPA?
Will you graduate from a CA high school?
(What’s your parents’ budget)?
Why UCLA?
It’s definitely a reach, your odds are very low.
In order to have 50-50 chance you’d need a more rigorous schedule and a UC GPA over 4.
Where else are you applying?
My UC weighted gpa is 4.04
And unweighted is 3.7
I will graduate from a CA private school
And my parents can afford the tuition.
Would it help my odds if I bring my act score up to 34?
@gumbymom ?
It’s a reach.
It helps that you’re graduating from a California school, that your parents can afford to be full pay, and have a 4.04 ucgpa but UCs are heavily skewed toward curriculum rigor and GPA; test scores count less, and essays make the difference. So, see if you can increase curriculum rigor for senior year, focus on your essays, and craft a well-tiered list with several matches and two safeties.
Any school with an scceptance rate below 20% is a reach. You are within range but just based off your UC GPA and not taking specfific major, test scores, EC’s and essays into account, this is how you stack up.
Freshman admit rates (2016) for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19:
UCB: 14%
UCLA: 14%
UCSD: 44%
UCSB: 54%
UCD: 58%
UCI: 65%
UCSC: 85%
UCR: 94%
UCM: 96%
How important would the test scores and EC’s be in the admission process ?
As indicated above, along with essays they matter but can’t offset criteria such as curriculum rigor and GPA.
Private colleges tend to be more holistic, with one element possibly offsetting another.
As you can see, you odds are about 1 in 10.
According to the above chart (thanks @gumbymon) your chances are 1 in 2 at UCSB and 8 in 10 at UCSC.
That would make UCLA a super reach, UCSB a match, and UCSC a safety.
Which other colleges are you applying to?
SDSU? Cal Poly? Chapman? Occidental? Pitzer? URedland’s? Anywhere out of California?
Sadly I’m taking all the honors/Ap classes that are offered by my school so my senior year is as rigorous as it can get. Applying to UCSD as well.
Hopefully my SAT/ACT scores (1520+ , 34+)improve for higher chances in my admission to UCLA
Might move your chances from one in ten to one in five.
Where else are you applying?
