Hey everyone 
I’m just curious to know what people think, as high schoolers, they want to study next year/in a few years in college. I’ve always loved politics and writing, along with film and numbers, so I’m looking at a double major in Political Science and Communications (with a focus on rhetoric and media) and a possible stats minor. Since I was a kid, I’ve LOVED politics, even though my parents don’t. It even snuck its way into my non-academic interests, hence the West Wing reference in the username and my favorite character from The Newsroom being my new icon.
The main goal is a political staffer and speechwriter, but being an advisor or a producer wouldn’t be half bad. High hopes, I guess.
Anyway, I made my plans to study and pursue politics solid about a year or a year and a half ago. My mom was supportive, and thinks I’ll do well but doesn’t “like” it too much. My dad, on the other hand, hates politics and doubts my dedication and passion for it.
Politics and writing were my first loves as a toddler for my future. It switched to aeronautical engineer, musician, and author for awhile, with a slight consideration of law practice, but somehow my almost-grown-up heart went back to what my three-year-old heart dreamed of. And I’m happy about that and won’t let anyone stop me.

Thank God, I’m very lucky that my parents will support my decision to study what I want to.
When I was little, I was obsessed with politics. I thought I could change the world. I wanted to be a senator, member of the house, or POTUS (talking about high hopes lol). As I grew up, I saw the immense amount of hypocrisy and corruption in politics and realized that even if I didn’t end up being bought out, I’d have to deal with people who were on a daily basis.
For a while I thought I wanted to major in psychology because I’m curious about how people tick/think etc. But I knew that I didn’t want to counsel people. Therefor, when I heard about neuroscience it was a dream come true. Currently I want to double major in neuroscience (for a research, not medical, career) and political science, because I like law. I’m also interested in environmental science, so maybe I’ll combine that with law and be an environmental lawyer. I know that I want to help people with law. No corporate lawyer job for me!
I want to take lots of different courses in college and I’m open to changing my plans. Physics sounds cool (my school doesn’t offer it). I’d also try out economics.
@lemonlyman328 Those are interesting dream jobs. Will your dad try to stop you from studying what you want to, or is he just stating his opinion? This is kind of random, but doesn’t it disturb you that politicians don’t write their own speeches? For me, it negates the whole purpose of listening to them. What’s the point of listening to a script written by a professional writer that’s designed to cater to what you want to hear? It feels so pointless to me.
He just isn’t a fan, wouldn’t try to stop me. And yeah, it bothers me just a little, but if the writer knows the politician well and works closely with them or has similar ideals, I think it’s kinda okay. So I tend to want to be a “good” one, in the sense that I’ll make sure a good person is represented well.
